    What to do with trub

I couldn't resist and after 9 days I racked my first beer into a secondary. First of all, I want to say that beer smells phenomenal. I can't wait to try it mid-January! Secondly, I now have a layer about an inch thick on the bottom of the primary that I hate to waste if it can be used for...

    Deal on corny kegs

Just found this deal. I've never heard of the site so buy at your own risk, just thought I'd share the find. It seems like a good deal to me based on other sites price on single kegs. http://www.homebrewing.org/Set-of-Four-5-Gallon-Pin-Lock-Kegs-Used_p_3179.html

    Midwest supplies

That's what I thought. The sad thing is that even considering shipping cost, the Midwest kit that I got was $40 cheaper. The LHBS's comparable kit doesn't have a brew kettle, bottles, an ingredient kit...But hey, you get a free ($20 value) how to brew class that you have to drive for an hour...

    Midwest supplies

Yeah, I know about the lid thing. I didn't have a choice. My oven wasn't having it. I had a good rolling non-boil but in order to get a boil I had to put the lid on. I'm searching for a turkey fryer so I can use it instead. In the meantime it's either the stove or the side burner on the grill...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Friday I will be brewing batch #2 which is a Newcastle type beer. It's from my LHBS and it's called Nutcase Brown Ale. I'm trying to stagger these batches to establish a good pipeline. I think 5 gallons every 2-3 weeks should be more than enough!

    Boosting alcohol

Yeah. I figured it wasn't best to boost a clone. I may worry about tweaking that later when I've established an ability to tweak recipes to get a flavor profile that I'm looking for. As of right now I haven't even bottled my first batch yet...

    Boosting alcohol

This guy did have one batch that would shoot beer everywhere like he shook them up. I assume now that he had too much sugar in his bottles...

    Midwest supplies

I guess I should include some info too, ehh? My kit was missing several KEY items. First, a thermometer. They don't include anything to monitor your temperatures which is crucial for steeping specialty grains and pitching yeast. My kit came with a hydrometer but no theif or tube for checking...

    Midwest supplies

I just picked up the Midwest intermediate plus kit. I added another bucket for a friend with airlock. So for 20 gallons capacity I spent $280 with shipping. Not bad. But according to these guys I wasted a LOT because it comes with two glass carboys...

    Midwest supplies

Funny story, if you contact Midwest, they will tell you that one step IS a sanitizer. Supposedly the manufacturer didn't want to spend the money getting testing/certification done to be able to call it a sanitizer. I said ok, and thanks and prompty bought Star San.

    Boosting alcohol

I'm not looking for huge spikes. It's flavor first, everything else second. I'm just looking in to it for reference. I know a LHB'er that consistently produces excellent beers in the 6-9% range and if I can hit that quality with an ABV nearly double where I am now it'd last longer! Ha! I had...

    Boosting alcohol

As my first batch draws closer to bottling date (only one more week) I'm really surprised about how relaxed I have been throughout since pitching the yeast. I had my concerns about the rate of bubbling throughr the airlock but I really only check it once a day to be sure it hasn't made a mess...

    My First Batch

I know that it's a temperature thing with the grains. I do have specialty grains with all of the kits that I have so far so, as far as i know, tannins are still an issue with that. I pitched the yeast at the upper end of the temperature range and as it fermented the temperature here dropped...

    My First Batch

Well....Mayyyybeee a leeeeeetttle bit more. :cross: I have two fermenting buckets, two 6.5 gallon carboys, a bottling bucket, 250 caps, a bottle capper, 48 bottles (another 54 that I have accrued from enjoying store bought, pry off bottled beer), a carboy brush, three recipe kits, a 5 gallon...

    My First Batch

After much discussion about sanitizers I brewed my first batch Wednesday afternoon. I learned a lot in the brew process, found some pieces that I was missing and worried too much. After four hours of work and worry (yeah, I know, four hours) my yeast was pitched and my beer was on its way...

    Aluminum brew pot?

I asked this question not long ago and found that at least a few people on here are already brewing with turkey fryers. I'll be picking one up tomorrow if this snow/ice passes without leaving much behind. If you think boiling a 3 gallon is tough, try a 5! on an electric stove! :cross: I...

Turns out carbon steel is different from stainless steel: a cautionary tale

This was my concern. That, and as a steel worker (sheet, but still steel) I can tell you that stuff is DIRTY.
