    All-grain first time mistakes?

Nice work fartinmartin. I once racked to my bottling bucket without prepping my priming solution but I caught it before getting the bottles filled. I feel your pain though:)

    All-grain first time mistakes?

Not really a mistake but a tip...have some DME on hand. Inevitably something will happen and you don't hit your target OG (mash temp, preboil volume, efficiency, etc). Just plan to make an adjustment with DME, crack a beer and enjoy the day and you will have a great time. For my first all...

    What are you drinking now?

In honor of New Years drinking some bubbly right now.

    Why DME for starter/harvesting?

I only do 1-2 quart starters so for me the price of DME is well worth the time saved. I did do an all grain brew in a bag starter once when I was out of DME and it was such a pain to get out the mill, crush grain, do the mash, etc, etc, etc. Call me lazy but my free time is precious!!

    Brewing blunders

Okay I made the all time bonehead brewing blunder today. Turned my high gravity wit beer into a triple by forgetting to add my orange peel and coriander at the end of the boil. Should turn out to be a great beer anyway but I am super disappointed with myself. Curios to hear others "brewing...

Jamils Irish Red ale- Roasted barley substitute 300L?

Cregar, how did your brew turn out? I just starting drinking a batch of Jamils Irish red that I followed grain bill exactly per recipe. Taste is amazing and I can definitely smell and taste the roasted barley, however I was surprised with the color. Much more brown than red color. I tell my...

    Dead bugs in new carboy

Don't sweat it. I routinely get a few spiders in my bottles if I leave them on the basement floor and forget to box them. Just make sure the carboy is visually clean after Oxyclean then sanitize!

    Grain Bill Question

Sounds like consensus is weight. Thanks!

    Grain Bill Question

Got a question for how people calculate grain bill (for all grain). Most recipes specify percentages of ingredients (i.e. 90% 2-row, 5% crystal 60, 5% victory). Question is do you take the percentages by weight or by the amount of fermentables they will contribute. Currently I go by weight...

First AG in need of advice

It is nice to have a grain mill if you can afford it. I got much better consistency when crushing on my own. I will assume you are batch sparging. Here is how I would do calculations for this batch. Strike water @ 1.25 qt/lb = 4.4 gal Estimated grain absorb @ 0.13 gal/# = 1.8 gal Estimated...

    Estimated efficiency for higher gravity

Thanks for the help. Ended up getting 65% efficiency with a 1.084 OG, planned for 70%. Close enough for me on first try.

Which beer bottles are worth saving for bottling home brew?

I have the same problem as saxman. When I have used bottles with close second lip I will get 1-2 bottles a batch that brake apart when I open the beer (cracked during capping). The ones I was using were boulevard and summit. My top reuses are Sam Adams, New Belgium and New Glarus all which...

    Estimated efficiency for higher gravity

Hello all. I am attempting my first higher gravity mash tomorrow, shooting for around 1.087-1.090 OG. I batch sparge and usually have overall efficiency of 75-80%. I calculate my grain bill using 75% and usually hit my target OG or overshoot by one or two points. These beers have been in the...
