    Is my starter OK?

Yes, that's very comprehensive and helpful. Thanks for taking the time for the thorough writeup.

    Is my starter OK?

This is really helpful. Thank you.

    Is my starter OK?

I can do a 3l pretty easily. I'll boil 3l of LME at 1.03 for 20 minutes, let it cool to about 65-70, pour the liquid off the top of the starter and pour the fresh stuff in. Does that sound right?

    Is my starter OK?

OK, that makes sense. I feel like an idiot for pitching the whole thing. So can I just boil up a new volume of sugar for the small layer of sediment that I've got from this 2l batch?

    Is my starter OK?

OK... sorry, I'm fairly new to this. When I pitch should I just be using the sludge at the bottom, or the whole volume of the starter?

    Is my starter OK?

The OG I'm brewing is 1.05. Would a multistage be necessary?

    Is my starter OK?

Soon Monday I started some Wyeast American Ale II. It was an older package, and the Mr. Malty calculator said it had 3% viability.I had just been agitating it by hand, and took it into the bedroom with me on Monday night. That night the fire went out, and the room got pretty cold. Maybe 50°. I...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

I always starsan every part of my keg, set my carboy up on a table and my keg on the floor, run co2 into the keg for a minute to build a 'buffer layer' at the bottom of the keg, and start an auto-siphon with the tube touching the floor of the keg. If I feel ambitious I'll put sanitized foil over...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

So far I've just run co2 into kegs through the gas in at very low pressure for a minute before racking into them, making sure the syphon tube sits at the floor of the keg. I figure co2 sinks, and my tank is generally cooler than ambient air, and all I really need is a thin layer of co2 to sit on...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

Thanks for the coherent guide, this is exactly what I've been looking for. Am I correct in interpreting that you don't use a starter, just 2 packs of yeast? I will water jacket in the crawl space to stabilize temperature, and then move it up to my upstairs bedroom. The thermal mass of the water...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

Thanks for the response. I will procure another satchet of S-23 and figure out a rehydration/starter plan. Two follow up questions: 1) by 'fermentation' do you mean primary? Assuming proper pitch rates etc how long might primary on a lager take and how do I know when to rack to secondary? 2)...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

Also, what temp regimen should I follow, and when do I know when to move from primary to secondary? I have a garage that stays pretty cool, but can swing from 35 to 60 in 12 hours, crawl space stable at 50ish, and a keezer adjustable however I want, but I wanna keep it at reasonable serving...

    New Coffin Keezer Build

Thanks! I broke down and scrapped the old tap box design, picked up a little more cedar, and built a MUCH roomier and simpler box for the top. Just gotta insulate and put a top on it, and then I can stain, finish, and hook up hardware. Also along the way I went from a 3 faucet design, to 3...

    Lager, pitching quantity, and starters

Hey all, Intermediate extract brewer, but this will be my first lager since I just got a temp controlled keezer running. I'm gonna do the NB Czech Pilsner, and selected S-23 yeast. I assume just one vial will come. From what I've just read, everyone is saying you need 2 vials. Can I just make a...

Is your Keezer Killing your Wallet?

I'm in the process of building one of these, and have decided not to add active cooling to the exterior, though I am using an identical fan to circulate air over the shanks on the inside. My logic is that these freezers are designed to keep the interior at around 0 F, and I'm only asking it too...

    New Coffin Keezer Build

All stained up and with a couple coats of polyurethane that makes the wood really pop. Trim and insulation is done, but I'm stalled out on the coffin box. When I strayed from my initial plan I made things a lot harder for myself, and I may go back a few steps and re-work it with a simpler design...

Keezer to end all Keezers (in my house) build

The backsplash is pretty baller. Curious what temp differentials you end up with between keezer floor and coffin. I'm unsure whether I'll need to run dryer hose down low to pipe colder air up to cool my shanks and faucets or if the relatively undirected fan will manage well enough on its own.

Keezer to end all Keezers (in my house) build

Rad project. I'm at a similar stage (cabinet done, building coffin box now) as you on a keezer project this week: New Coffin Keezer Build https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=494222 Dunno if you're more planned ahead than I am, but I'm just thinking about coffin cooling now. Probably...

    New Coffin Keezer Build

Stained and polyed the top surface. Still wet with a second coat here. I drew up a real simple plan for a forward-canted box, like a parallelogram, but next thing you know when I'm fabricating the pieces I start embellishing them a little, and next thing you know I'm figuring out compound...

    Howdy

Thanks for the advice. Like I said, I think O2 will be my next investment, in time to try my first lager, after the zillion dollars I'm sinking into my keezer (see edit). Of course the keezer also lends itself to temp-controlled lagering. I haven't really had a proper cycle going, in terms of...
