    Milkshake IPA base?

I just brewed a MSIPA and used both. Just a bit.. 2 row, flaked oat, wheat and crystal 40L. Mine is just very clear since I used WL001 yeast as my home brew shop didn't have the yeast I wanted. The other variance I used was vanilla flavor vs beans. Just a little bit so not to overpower. It...

Ss Brewtech Unitank- maintaining temp in a garage!

I'm running Spikes with the temp control kit in my garage. I have their insulation jacket and I'm able to keep the temp right where I need it in the winter, with the garage sometimes hitting low 40's.

Fast Ferment leak - glue? putty? silicone?

You need to make sure any of the sharp seams are cut away, but have to be careful doing so to not damage the threads. That's what is probably what is causing your leak. Also, did you twist all caps on and off about 10 times (tighten and loosen) to seat the plastic?

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I plug the therm well with some paper towel and it holds the probe in place. Been working great so far haha I also am curious why Spike provides a racking arm with the Flex Plus, but not the CF. I have one of each for different applications, but thought it was interesting.

    Spike Flex Plus Owners

So I came across my first brew with the Flex Plus that I wish I had a dump. I'm moving an IPA to secondary so I can add puree and dry hop and don't want the yeast bed. I went to buy another Flex Plus from my LHBS, but they only had CF5's so I bought one of those so now have 1 of each. I think...

    Picabrew

Short story, but the Pico brew is what got me into home brewing. I've never owned one, but saw one at Bed, Bath and Beyond for the first time and wife was going to get it for me if I wanted to start brewing. Ended up going with a home brew setup instead of the Pico Brew. I did some research...

Looking for secondary fermentor brand recommendations

I have a flex plus as I didn't secondary, but the beer I'm fermenting now I need a secondary due to a puree and dry hop time. I ended up going to my local HBS to grab another flex plus, but they were out so I ended up with a Spike Conical CF5. With the dump port, I can secondary right from the...

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

This is what I do. I use one of the canned worts though. Dump it in, fill it with water, add the water and pitch the yeast. Put it on a stir plate and let it run for 24 hours and pitch the entire contents. Haven't had an issue yet. I've never had a thick slurry since the stir plate is...

    Temperature control

I'm using temp control with my Spikes system. It has been a great addition and keeps temps within a degree. I've got an IPA going now at 67 degrees and its in my garage so only using the heating option. Once it hits 66 it kicks on and gets right back up to temp. This is my second brew with...

Running out of propane during boil

I don't run propane for my boil (I'm on electric), but I have a 60,000 btu propane fire pit and I've run it for 4 hours and used about a 1/4 of a tank. I doubt your burner would run out with a full tank or even half a tank. Could always keep a spare close by and do a quick swap. I lost power...

Don't use mini CO2 regulators for closed pressure transfer

Ok ok.. Stupid to even try as the volume on a 72g tank is not enough to charge dead space and push. But figured what the he// since I wanted to get my Hefeweizen in the keg. About half way through the transfer started hearing a popping, then frost appearing on the reg, then the gauge going out...

    LHBS Ouratgeous Prices

CO2 aside, LHBS are going to be a bit more expensive than online. Depending on overhead it makes a difference. I know mine is a bit high. There are certain things that I just can't justify buying there, but I grab ingredients, small bits and stuff that I know isn't marked up much. The area...

    Grainfather!!

I'll have to pull raw water temps from my hose bib in the summer. I'm on a well and it stays pretty cold even in the hot months. I have a connection in my garage where I brew to make it easy. Worst case, I'll coil my hose into a cool and dump ice over it before I start my brewday. It would...

    Grainfather!!

I also think that if I left the valve mostly closed it wouldn't have dropped temp as much. I initially let it wide open so a lot of wort would go through cooling based on the ambient air. I only lost boil for those 5 minutes and it was a hefeweizen with 2 hop additions. I like your idea...

    Starter volume

I'll def look into that. Worst case, have dry yeast as my backup :). I'm fortunate that I have a local shop with a good selection within 30 minutes so my brew on a whim options are pretty open

    Starter volume

I was using liquid for the starter. I used muliple packs prior based on a pitch calculator. I'm only doing 5.5 gallons at the time I pitch, but went off the count of the calculator. I'm still in my first year of homebrewing so the calculator was my go to. I've used dry and liquid. I have...

    Grainfather!!

Only on my 2nd brew with the GF and the first was a rush due to a failed mash and boil (long story, but in the end it was ok) so this was the first time I used the counterflow and I love it. My immersion chiller took 45 minutes minimum to chill. Once this was dialed in within a couple minutes...

    Starter volume

Funny this comment is here.. Just over the weekend the local shop convinced me to begin using starters since I was buying multiple yeast packs to get my cell count. This time I got a stir plate, graduated cylinder and used the canned starter. I think this will be my way forward since I started...
