    Fly Sparging - Theory Question

I am with you on this. I wouldn't think it would matter as long as the outflow is less then the inflow and you are not dumping the sparge in large amounts that would disturb the grain bed.

Pausing fermentation until I get back in town???

Why not just suck it up and leave the AC dialed down a little, say 70 degrees for the few days you will be gone?

    Bad Washed Yeast?

You probally killed some yeast when it first hit, but cooled down as it mixed with what was in there and the rest of the yeast survived. You want to make a starter anyway, so by doing so you will be able to determine if any yeast survived. Not only just determine that some survived, but to...

    10 gallon cooler mash tun...

Just to be clear, my 10 gal cooler is a Igloo. In my cooler, the 12" false bottom is within .125" of the sides, so yes it is tight! The top of the cooler is 13" but the bottom tapers down slightly. 25lbs of grain should not be a problem. Just use 1.25 qts/lb and you will be fine. You can fit...

    10 gallon cooler mash tun...

9" false bottoms are for 5gal round coolers. 12" stainless is the way to go on 10 gal coolers.

    Fermentation done after 24 hours?

See your problem is your riding a Goldwing! So obviously you can't take too much excitement! :cross: JK! Just relax and let it go for a couple of weeks. I just checked my blonde ale and at 15 days, it went from 1.060 to 1.004 so it's ready. But guess what? I am not going to bottle yet as I...

    Trub and loss!

I move my carboys when I bottle too, but I just let them sit while I sterilize my bottles and such. By the time I am ready to bottle it has settled down again and I can bottle clear beer.

    Best Thermometer

At the very least, waterproof the lead per Bobby's instructions. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/remote-probe-thermometer-wort-proofing-26905/ The walmart digital thermometer will not like the wort enviroment if you don't waterproof it. I found out the hard way the first time I used it for...

    So.........

I think grasshoppers work better in the primary. When they swim around they keep the yeast in suspension so the fermentation goes quicker! This is also a good way to restart a stuck batch, just repitch some grasshoppers to get the yeast working again! :tank:

    Back in the Saddle

I have the opposite problem. Winter is my preferred brew time as it is easy for me to keep the fermentation temps in check. Summer time, my house gets too hot so I brew less. I have 25 gallons in the pipeline right now and I want to get a couple more batches going before I give up until it cools...

    1st time washing yeast???

I like useing a couple of gallon pickle jars as my settling vessels before I fill my mason jars. That way I am hopefully leaving the settled out trub behind. But some trub gets through to the mason jars and so be it, the yeast will survive.

No more AG for me :(

Mine hates the smell too so I just brew outside. Not brewing is never the option! She also prefers the crappy beers, and hates hoppy or bitter beers, so I win in the fact she will not drink most of my beers!

    Barley Crusher Problem

Just skip the cheap ryobi drill and you will do fine! My old 18v Dewalt drill does it easily. Or maybe your batteries are just at the end of their life. I crush 15-20 lbs in a few minutes and any cordless drill should handle that easily. No matter what, you need one hand or your knee on the base...

My wife is the best ! Barley Crusher

I tightened mine to .028 with no problems so that is where I crush.

    Trub with washed yeast.

I read in Snyders book that some trub (dead yeast cells) is good for the viable yeast as nutrients. So I do not fret some trub in my yeast jars. I would say that a half inch layer of yeast in a quart jar is plenty. I usually use quart jars to initially harvest my yeast and then transfer them...

Greedy Us, the Carboy is Oozing Apple Sludge

Thats why they make 8 gallon plastic buckets..............So you can do 7 gallon batches and still have room for fermentation! Right now you run the risk of loosing a lot of your yeast to your mess on the floor. I was trying to do 6.5gal batches in a 7gal carboy, but I got tired of blowing off a...

The new amazing bud light bottles

You mean that the habit of scratching the label of a beer, to identify it as you own at a party, was never thought of before?! Head about to explode!:drunk:

Anyone have trouble with The grind from midwest?

Using a store’s mill is not grinding your own as you do not control the gap. I would expect any LHBS to set their mill pretty loose to ensure no complaints from their customers. Even so, I would expect a better efficiency then what you are seeing. I have my own mill and I set it on the tight...

    sneeze

I soak my foam stopper in Starsan before placing on my flask with the thought that it will kill anything that lands on top. Even without the Starsan, the stopper should prevent most airborne nasties from penetrating to the yeast.
