Brewing / Fermenting in a stock pot

Great info. Thanks guys. I'm going to have to give it a try. I'll keep my eye out for some of the other vessels that y'all mentioned as well.

Liquor laws. Whats up with that?

Alabama: You can buy beer and wine pretty much everywhere except only after Noon on Sundays. Liquor has to be bought from a liquor store. There are some dry counties left I believe where everything is off limits. I remember as a kid, we lived in Walker county for a while and my folks would have...

Brewing / Fermenting in a stock pot

Hey gang, I have lately been doing 9 - 10 gallon batches of BIAB. I have thought about doing some 1 gallon test batches. I don't really have the small fermenters needed for that though. However, I do have about 4 of the small (about 2 gallon) stainless stock pots in the kitchen. I was...

    Brew days wear me out!

I'm 42 and it totally wears me out too. Part of that is the standing on concrete for that time. Mainly, though, I think it is because I too have to carry everything out and back in individually. I can't wait to build a mobile rig one day.

    Refractometer and BeerSmith

Good advice guys on using a hydrometer to make sure that the refractometer is calibrated correctly. Unfortunately I don't have a hydrometer at the moment. I guess I'll just hope that it is close for the time being. Maybe if it is off a little at least it will be consistently off each time...

    Refractometer and BeerSmith

Hi gang, I was wondering how y'all use a refractometer in conjunction with BeerSmith. I was wondering if people just take their OG and FG gravities in specific gravity straight from the refractometer and enter it into the OG and FG fields in BeerSmith. I know that there is a...

BIAB, PID, Propane, Recirculation, Hope, Dreams, and Questions

That leads me to another thought. When you have an electric setup, and let's say it is running at 30% output, does it have On and Off cycles that use pulse width modulation during the On cycle, or does it basically stay on continuously and pulse width modulate the entire time. For example: ON...

BIAB, PID, Propane, Recirculation, Hope, Dreams, and Questions

Hey thanks everyone. I had originally thought that since I already had the nice burner that I should just try to automate things using it. However, since I would have to get recirculation capability anyway plus a controller plus a gas valve. Then I would have to modify the burner for safety...

BIAB, PID, Propane, Recirculation, Hope, Dreams, and Questions

Hey gang, I am currently BIABing by heating my water to strike temp with a Blichman propane burner. I then mash in and cover the kettle with a sleeping bag for insulation. I'll check temp and stir a couple of times during the mash. I do have a screen in the bottom of the kettle to keep from...

    Complete tear down

I brew BIAB with a single boil kettle. It has tri-clamp fittings. I do not as yet recirculate, whirlpool, or any of that jazz. I do break down all of the fittings each time and give them a quick wash in some of the PBW solution. I don't know that it is totally needed though. I figure that even...

    Yeast starter for 10 gals

Thanks guys. That calculator is really cool. After playing with it I think I should be able to determine my actual needs and go from their. I did go ahead and order a 5 liter flask though. Hopefully that will take care of some of the mess if I have to go big. @ViciousFishes That is a cool idea...

    Adding grains at temp?

Thanks guys. That all make sense. I seem to be at tad over temp most of the time. I will try shooting for a strike temp a couple of degrees low and then raise it if I need to.

    Yeast starter for 10 gals

Hey gang, With all of my brews to date except the last one, I have done five gallon batches. I would usually create a yeast starter with say 1500 ml of water and 150g of DME. These all worked great. With the last batch I did a 10 gallon batch. On it I did a 1500 ml starter as above, then I...

    Adding grains at temp?

Thanks guys. It sounds like it is doable as long as I take care not to overheat any portion of the mash. I think for now I will just work with the calculators more carefully and try to do it like I was previously.

    Adding grains at temp?

Hey gang, I have gone to BIAB from extract and have several batches under my belt, but am still new to it. So, historically I have used BeerSmith to tell me what temperature to bring my water to (say 159) such that when I add my grains it will cool down to the proper mash temperature. I have...

    Question on Carbing/Serving PSI

At 40 degrees and 10 psi, I would have though that you would have been in pretty good shape, assuming the beer was already carbed, which it seems to have been. According to the chart, you would have an equilibrium carbonation of 2.3 volumes, which in my mind would be pretty good. Perhaps...

That's kind of what I figured. Thanks!

    Blichmann burner and oil

So, I just got my new Blichmann burner yesterday. It says to not use it to heat oil. Is there a real reason not to do fry a turkey or something with this thing, or is Blichmann just covering their liability? Thanks
