Measuring pH in a step mash

Thanks! Sadly I’m not in a position to do that. I guess I’ll add 80% of the suggested lactic acid to hit my target, and check further into the mash to see if I got it.

Measuring pH in a step mash

Hey all, Trying out a complicated step mash on a pilsner, and wondering when to measure pH. Normally I take a reading at 15min, but that's for a 148–152F mash. Today I won't hit 145F until 60min+. When in this process (below) should I take a reading? Thanks!

    Help with Pilsner H2O profile

Thanks for the comments all. Does the following seem reasonable for a pils using only German Pilsner and Saaz hops, built from distilled water? Calcium: 50.1 ppm Magnesium: 5.2 ppm Sodium: 0 ppm Sulfate: 59.9 ppm Chloride: 59.7 ppm Bicarbonate: 0 ppm

    Help with Pilsner H2O profile

Hey Dgallo. It's a SMaSH Pilsner I'm trying out, and it looks like a Czech/German hybrid. Saaz hops with German pilsner. My local shop only had German pils in stock.

    Help with Pilsner H2O profile

Hey all, Been reading about pilsner water profiles, and what BeerSmith3's water section recommends seems to be off from what I'm learning elsewhere. For example, Palmer and Kaminski's Water book recommends 30-50ppm of calcium, depending on factors, but BeerSmith's recommendation is 7.5ppm(???)...

Rogue Yeast Hiding in My Conical?

Hey all, Kegged 10gal of witbier this weekend and the darndest thing happened. I'd cold crashed the wit for a few days (long story, its still hazy) and dumped the yeast. Couple days later I saw nothing in my sight-glass, went to keg, and all went smooth for the first 7.5gal or so. But then...

    Rolled Oats

My wife and I like to make Musli and buy the Bob’s Red Mill old fashioned oats in 25# sacks, so I use those. Interesting about instant breaking down quicker, which I’ll have to try & see if I notice a difference. However, with a 60–90min mash, not sure it’s worth buying another variety if you...

    First time making a starter

Bit late to offer advice, but I see the others have done well on that front. My question is, how did everything turn out? Did your yeast take off to a good start?

    No oxygen dry hopping

Any issues with bags clogging conical dump ports? I rack through the dp on my CF10, rather than the racking port, as I hate to lose that beer that lives between the two. Cheers!

Critique my Hop-Burst El Dorado SMaSH?

I may do that in the future. Right now I have 1# of regular pellet hops, but that's a good idea.

Critique my Hop-Burst El Dorado SMaSH?

Thanks, kingmatt. I thought having all the additions within last 15min counted as a burst, but I see you point! Do you mean to have no boil hops and put it all in the whirlpool and dry hop?

Critique my Hop-Burst El Dorado SMaSH?

Hey all, I'm creating a 5.5gal SMaSH American IPA to get a handle on El Dorado hops and hop bursting, both of which are new to me. Looks like El Dorado isn't the boldest of hops, so I'm wondering if I'm taking the right steps to bring out the flavor. Not looking for an IBU-bomb, and the 56...

IceMaster Max - Adding Heat - Step by Step

Do you think the CF10 will be okay to draw the power from the Icemaster? (not using Kveik), and thanks!

Very nice, TrevorBarton12 Would you mind uploading a pic of where those wires connect to the Icemaster? Cheers!

IceMaster Max - Adding Heat - Step by Step

Hey maxr, with the Spike conical heater, did you need to us a power adapter, so was the Icemaster's power sufficient? Can't find power specs anywhere for my CF10's heater. Thanks! Great thread Beerwildered!
