Low Pre-boil & Original Gravity, but High Final Gravity

Sorry about the delayed reply. Here's a pic of the final gravity hydrometer

Low Pre-boil & Original Gravity, but High Final Gravity

I'm using Brady Instruments Precision Hydrometer Set, which I got as a gift. Absolutely love it.

Low Pre-boil & Original Gravity, but High Final Gravity

Yeah, I completely ballsed-up my initial post. The central question is, how do I end up with lower OG, and still end up with a higher than expected ABV? It seems counter-intuitive to me that despite having fewer sugars with which to work, I end up with ABV above what I expected. Sorry for all...

Low Pre-boil & Original Gravity, but High Final Gravity

Good questions and thanks for the help on this! I did type the FG wrong. Beer Smith estimated 1.060 OG and 1.020 FG. 1.0096 was measured FG, down a 1.053 OG (ABV is 5.70%). I milled the malts quite fine due to a previous efficiency issue Recipe is Lou's Best ESB, which I augmented a little bit...

Low Pre-boil & Original Gravity, but High Final Gravity

Hey all, Just finished fermenting an English bitter that had a low pre-boil gravity (Est: 1.049 vs. Actual: 1.042) and a low OG (Est: 1.06 vs. Actual: 1.053), but finished with a higher final gravity than expected: (Est: 1.012 vs. 1.096). Anyone have insights into how this happens? It's not...

Carbonation Loss from Conical to Keg

Hey all, Any suggestions for preventing carbonation loss while transferring from a conical to a keg without using a spunding valve? Don’t have a SV and not enough time to order one before the party I need to serve this at. I’m cold crashing an English bitter in my CF10, which I’ll put on...

Water question: "magnesium chloride" vs "magnesium chloride hexahydrate"

Hey all! Playing with water chem and while Bru'N has a line for magnesium chloride hexahydrate, and want to give using it a try. The dietary supplement I ordered, however, says nothing about the hexahydrate component. Will this still work? Is plain ol' magnesium chloride okay for my brewing...

    Infection in Stainless-Steel Conical

Thanks, Bobby. Do you—or anyone—know if the Spike butterfly-valve handles can take that? Cheers!

    Infection in Stainless-Steel Conical

They said this would happen, someday. My first infection. The pilsner in my Spike CF10 tastes like yogurt, and not in a good way... not sure how it happened. Any suggestions on cleaning my conical, and can I boil/reuse my Spike EPDM gaskets? Here's what I'm thinking of doing.: Stage 1 Boil...

Which Triple Scale Hydrometer Do you Like?

In market for a new triple-scale hydrometer. Anyone recommend one over the others? And are there jars that use less wort/beer to measure? Cheers!

    Hot-side infection/cleaning?

    Sure does, ncbrewer. Thanks!

    Hot-side infection/cleaning?

Just had an infection with a pilsner in my stainless-steel conical fermenter, which I’m going to take apart and fully scrub & disinfect. But how about the hot side? I have an EBIAB system. I run hot wort through my pump/hoses before for the last 15min of the boil before chilling and using them...

    ICEMASTER MAX 2

Ha! Yeah, I thought of that silicone idea after I crammed my Spike temp-system's connectors on. Had a panic when they were leaking and I couldn't get them off. Was about to take a nut-cracker to the things (which aren't cheep!). Went for broke and really shoved them onto my icemaster and the...
