Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Dunnes Stores Lager. It's a department store in Ireland. Beer tastes like a 9V battery.

    Car horn won't shut off

That happened to a friends Jetta. We pulled the fuse to stop the horn, and the steering wheel (or the part that activates the horn) needed to be replaced.

    Porter?

I like to keep my porter pretty simple 8 - 10% crystal and 8 - 10% chocolate or roasted barley (or a mix). Add pale ale malt to hit your desired gravity, and go for a BU:GU of .55 - .60. I like the flavor of the dark malt over hops in a porter, but a 1/2 oz for 15 min and a 1/2 oz at flame out...

    Balancing my system.

The whole keg balancing situation really bums me out. I have a home-made Sanyo mini-fridge kegerator with a 2 tap tower. I carb to 12 psi and serve with 5' of 3/16" line. I get bad foaming, particularly as the keg gets empty. I pour a huge glass of foam, then when the glass clears the beer...

Do you pitch on previous beer's yeast cake?

I have a conical, and I collected about a cup of thick yeast sludge (S-04 compacts tight) and dumped it in a new batch of beer, and man-o-man did it ferment fast. By the way...both batches are yummy!

The cure for your short hose troubles

OK so I read all 22 pages and I'm fairly convinced that this will solve my carb / pouring problems. But considering the 'you might die by using this product' aspect is the alternative using longer hose? I have a Sanyo kegerator with a 2 tap tower and 5' of 3/16 line on each keg, serving at...

    Dumping yeast from conicals?

I have a V-Vessell and I don't dump anything until I'm ready to keg. Mine does have a collection vessell on the bottom though so most of the sediment is contained. I keep my beer in the fermenter for one to two weeks and never had any problems. Yeast harvesting is great from conicals BTW.

    Home brew has ruined me

I'm pretty much in agreement. I was at the beer shop the other day getting a 6-er for my sister-in-law who has...simple tastes, and I picked up a 6-er of Cisco Brewers Whale's Tale Pale Ale at the recommendation of the guy at the shop. I was pretty pissed off when I got home and realized that...

English Ale yeast for a stout?

In my opinion S-04 is great in just about any ale.

    US vs. UK Challenger Hops

Does anyone know what the flavor / aroma differences between US and UK Challenger hops are? I love Challenger and just saw that Hopsdirect has 1# bags for $12, but they are US Challenger. I can't seem to find a 1# bag of UK Challenger anywhere, especially at that great price.

    Most overrated high priced beers

Boston Lager. People talk about it like it is the most amazing thing they ever drank but its just no good.

regulator closed but guage shows pressure

I have exactly the same problem with mine. A few months ago this happened and I opened up the regulator and cleaned the rubber diaphram inside and it seemed to be fixed. Now the pressure is just unregulated to the low side. I think it takes replacing the diaphram inside. Does anyone else...

    Shirron vs. Trub

What is the best way to filter trub from the kettle before it goes through a Shirron plate chiller? I used to use a counterflow chiller and it didn't matter if I the bottom of the kettle drained with a little trub in the wort, but I'm worried about clogging my new Shirron. Will trub permanently...

    no o-ring lube! problem?

Yeah I never used it either and have not had a problem. Just make sure the O ring is not damaged or cracked. Soap check the lid when you pressurize and adjust for any leaks and you will be fine.

    Sluggish S-04 - temperature?

I brewed an Oatmeal Stout on Thursday and pitched a pack of S-04 (rehydrated). Usually by now, 2 days later, it is fermenting vigorously, but not this time. My basement is at about 65 - 66 degrees right now, about 2 - 3 degrees cooler than it normally is. What's everyone elses experience...

    Oh no! Keg leaked Co2

I lost an entire 5 lbs of CO2 through the vent valve. The beer will be fine for a day until you can get more gas, just leave the lid on.

    Conversion time at 150 degrees?

OK...possible stupid question. If you are mashing dark grains for a stout how do you know if you converted starch to sugar with iodine? Doesn't iodine turn the liquid black if there is still starch?

    Conversion time at 150 degrees?

    Thanks for the info.

    Conversion time at 150 degrees?

How long should I mash at 150 degrees to get full conversion? 60 minutes? 90 minutes?
