History of Brewing on TV: Jan. 1st!..?

I noticed on the History Channel's website that they will be reairing the Modern Marvel's Brewing show on January 1st at 11:00pm EST. The times are NOT consistent across time zones. Link below to the History Channel's schedule and change the date to Jan. 1st...

    Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle

Interested in the history of American beer from circa ~1840-Present? Check out Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle. The book chronicles the growth of the American beer experience during the 19th century, discusses the "temperance" movement that essentially brought about the prohibition era and...

    Building a Sparge Arm?

Yuri Rage: How much did your set up cost? Do you get good efficiency from your sparge arm even though it doesn't spin? Thanks for the pic! It looks like I would have to do some soldering with your design and that's difficult for me...I have enough trouble buttering toast let alone...

    Building a Sparge Arm?

Does anyone know where a simple design can be found (...with pictures!) for making a sparge arm? I am not very handy but they don't look too complicated. Is there possibly a thread started for this already? Thanks all.

How much wort can I boil on a stovetop?

Cheesefood: to answer you question, I would guess it takes ~15+ minutes to bring a gallon of water to boil on my electric stove...yah, I know, not very good. Here in lies my concern about making a higher volume boil. uwmgdman, I am guessing you are using a gas stove...? david_42, I think...

How much wort can I boil on a stovetop?

I have been brewing extract beers for a few years. In doing so I boil about 2 gallons of wort on my stovetop and top off my wort to 5 gallons in the Primary. I was thinking about moving into partial mash brewing but will need to boil a larger volume of wort. I do not have the capabilities...

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I have spent the past 3 days reading every entry. I am one of those people who wants to do some PM brews. I do not have the capabilities to go to AG in the forseeable (2-3 year) future. I do not have the room/yard/a garage/money/time...

    Understanding Oxidation

Thanks homebrew_99! So...If I have not reached my FG "range," I am more likely to see some new activity in the secondary even though the primary appeared to have completed the fermentation process? Would that be a safe assumption? If I have not reached the appropriate FG in the primary...

    Understanding Oxidation

Thank you Walker-san. I was lumping the two together. So, when does oxidation occur and how do you know it has/is happening? (side note: I have a Blue Moon Clone in the secondary. The air lock has shown signs of activity and there is a "mini-krausen" - in other words a few bubbles - on...

    Understanding Oxidation

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the principles of unwanted oxidation. What happens when your beer goes through oxidation after the initial wort is boiled and the yeast is pitched? When do you know that unwanted oxidation has occurred? How to you prevent oxidation when you...

    Lemons and Limes in Beer...?

I think I heard once that lemons/limes can be used to balance the pH level of a beer. Is there any truth to that? That would kind of explain "off flavors" before adding the lemon/lime...

    Lemons and Limes in Beer...?

Just a general question to anyone who can shed some light into why lemons accompany many "honey wiess" beers (and other fruit "toppers" like limes with Coronas/many mexican beers, orange peels on Blue Moon and other Belgian style brews)? Is there a purpose for these "accessories"?

    New to homebrewing

As I novice brewer, I would say The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, 3rd Edition. Yes, there is a lot of information that might overwhelm a beginner in that book. I would suggest stopping before the advanced section in that case to avoid unnecessary confusion. Ninkasi

    Timeline for using crushed grains

Does anyone have a general rule of thumb for using crushed grains? More specifically, I purchased a kit from the local supply store. They crushed my steeping grains on-site. That was about 3 weeks ago. Do the crushed grains start to lose their integity after a period of time? How long do...

    Land of 10,000 Brews!

Greetings to all in Home Brew Forum Land! Along with all the other entries, I also wanted to introduce myself and share my brief home brewing history/experience. I live in Minneapolis, MN (soon to be Spokane, WA) and have been brewing for 6 years...well, more like 1999-2000, 2004-06. I...

New to the world of Homebrew!

brewmastaMike: I know the feeling when you are itching to devour one of your first homebrews. Be patient and don't scratch that itch too early. Taking gravity reading is the best way to determine if your beer is 'done.' If the Final Gravity stays the same for 2-3 days, your beer is...

    Beginning Brewer Needs Some Help

Thank you to everyone for their advice, insight, and personal experiences. gnef: Right now I am reading Charlie Papazian's Joy of Home Brewing, 3rd Edition. Here is one of his descriptions for steeping the grains, as Fatabbot explained a little better then me: "Add the cracked crystal...
