Just finished a strong bitter. It's my first try at a clone of Ringwood's Old thumper. I've never tried it but the recipe sounded good. I hit my numbers so I'm hoping for the best. Sunday or Monday I'll bottle a Dark Mild.

Has anybody tried an open fermentation in a conical? I plan to make a English Porter (5 Gal Batch) in a 7 gal Fast fermenter using Ringwood Ale (W1187) yeast. I'm wondering if leaving the top off the FF will achieve a result close to the open square. Rousing the yeast may be more difficult...

I have two FF and have not had the problem you've described. I usually let the wort settle in the boil kettle for 30 minutes or so before it goes into the FF. This seems to help minimize the sediment going into the FF.

This thread contained some good information and could be a reference for anyone looking to buy a conical. I've looked at some and the price on the Brewtech (7 Gal) is within reach. Spike Brewing should be releasing their conical line soon so I'll wait for them before making a decision. For...
