    Grainfather!!

This all makes sense. Have you tried no sparge with a small batch?

    Grainfather!!

How does it shorten your brew day? I'd expect the opposite since your introducing much colder water than existing wort temp and if you heat up sparge water during mash you don't add time for that step. It's simpler, but not a time saver. A no sparge could save a few minutes and be simpler...

    Grainfather!!

So checking in on you new GF owners. First, welcome! I'm guessing you mean the new controller when it is upgraded sold you? As I read previously in these posts it wouldn't be available until 2017, correct? Curious to hear reports from those with the new controller. What the hell are you...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

The post of yours above noted mash faster, that's where I was confused. Along with 2hrs grain to wort. I assume most brews will be one hour boils, so was curious how this mash faster was working! :) I read to add minerals to cold water, per Bru'n water calculator. Reread again now and it...

No sparge/full volume mashing on grainfather

I see your point on the HLT manual process and no sparge is the simple work around and if no difference in final beer why not!(beyond possibly it requires 2% or so more grain if you drop a pt or two in efficiency). I could see trying that out, not sure what the grain bill max would be on it. I'm...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

If your RO system is as fast as your HEBS, great! I know residential ones can be slow. If slow and you need to run and collect maybe this is the time to adjust water. All I've read is water additions are to cold water. I'm no expert but maybe you should inquire on any issues. If is a strong...

    Infected harvested slurry?

Few thoughts and questions here. I harvest yeast into mason jars and pitch without a starter, have had great results. I too have heard about the perils of using higher gravity yeast sources but with no experience I can't confirm if that's nonsense. I can confirm I've reused yeast from 070 OG...

No sparge/full volume mashing on grainfather

That's an approach but again I don't understand why? If you do a no sparge you lift the grain basket, let it drain, wait for boil. If you sparge you will do the same while you wait for boil. No time savings. What am I missing? My tips to save time during sparge above will help if that's your...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

This thread keeps getting better and better! A question I have, after reading the above water conservation is when you add your water adjustments? I presume your cooling with straight tap water and need to adjust. Do you add these in a separate cool water kettle and mix into the total mash water?

    Wort Cooling Technique

Well yeah it will improve performance but why not just build a CFC? Either coil you can wrap copper wire around, long wraps, say one rotation every 6-12" or so, and tack solder in place. Slip that inside a larger diameter hose (50% or so), and coil up, done. CFC. Pre chill your warm Miami (go...

    Christmas gear?

I agree with your view. I have a pH meter on my list, I keep on top of water additions for better beer. Also my gf is getting me 2 of those mini brew buckets. I want to split batches and ferment with different yeast. I know the brews will taste different but which will I like better?, or decide...

What came in the mail for you today?

Ha! I need to get a spare trailer tire (don't have one, not a good idea), to transport BBB. My boat, butt & beer to the lake- but not until Spring....

    25th Brew, 7th All-Grain,

Ha ha!! This made me think of...boating! I bought a boat last year, I've rented in the past, and wow, how much I learned this past year! Same thing for brewing, and I've been at it for a few years (after a 15yr hiatus). Always something, and I switched when I started back to AG, about 40 brews...

    Tips for winter brewing?

Precisely. Your answer is above, Beardedbrews nailed it and sets you up for future upgrades, thinking full on ferm chamber w/heat and cooling, I'd just use a STC 1000 so you can flash for the STC 1000+ project on HBT, see thread)

    1 GALLON starter?!?!

Good decision but, look at Brewersfriend. Without a stir plate, easy build btw, calls for a 2.3L starter to get you 260b cells with 8.3oz of DME. So about 1/2 of what you had. Seriously though build a stir plate. Easy-peasy.

    Grainfather!!

I have no experience with this, but two issues I'd have with this, first it looks too wide open, most of the hops will escape during the boil, secondly, unlike a hop basket, adding additional loads (and anything over an ounce or two) would be problematic. I guess you could get a few of them, but...

    Grainfather!!

If you whirlpool for a minute or so before you transfer, you might just be able to develop a cone of trub in the middle and then have better luck. I use a hop basket so haven't run into this issue, though I do stir and splash some of the hop trub out (always concerned about hop utilization with...

    All Grain Kit (help please!)

Let's start with a few questions! Have you watched someone homebrew? Assuming not, you will need to think about the process you will use to brew. The kits you link to are for fermenting. Simplest, most cost effective (based on the size of the kits you linked) AG is BIAB. Next is cooler MLT...
