    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Lots of great ideas here and as a GF owner I'd suggest to also insulate the boiler. I put pipe insulation, cut in half lengthwise around the boiler at bottom, middle and top. Then, put two wraps of reflectix on top. Works like a charm. The air space adds to the insulation properties. Holds mash...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I've been watching this thread closely from the beginning waiting for user responses. This is exactly how to handle this. I have the Grainfather and love it. This is a cheaper version with a few needs, a small recirc pump, a top plate (a simple mesh cut out from a SS splatter guard should do...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Brew it and enjoy it! I changed this recipe up by adding more chocolate and more flaked oats and flaked barley, along with some other tweaks, and it is great!

If this isn't completed yet I'd like a sack of Thomas Fawcett MO & TF GP. I'm one of those in PA. Not sure if I missed collection date and place? Thanks!

Grainfather mash tun questions - standpipe and mash screen ?

So a few questions on all of the above, and I did see your post on the main GF thread, but first to be clear on what you're trying to determine. I presume you wish to get to a well controlled mash temp in the grain bed, which is where I, but not all folks, believe the main action is occurring...

    Grainfather!!

Welcome, and congrats on first brew! As for being short on volume, did you tip the GF to fully pump out? How much was left behind? Its possible that you have a greater boil off rate going on, if you did empty well. If so, I'd adjust in the sparge, i.e. adjusting the factor of 6.9g for 5.5g of...

    Dual immersion chiller

Last fall during my last warm tap water days I put my IC in a bucket of water and froze it solid. Then hooked up as a prechiller to my CFC. Worked really well during my test about 20 min before I needed it. When I went to use it the water in the line froze solid! Next time no need to test!

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

Oh so many questions on this one! Seriously that's an interesting role, how large is it for a controller? Are you wearing many hats, CFO, treasurer, accountant, or "regular" controller function? Didn't realize there would be such a large corporation in this industry, but I know nothing about it...

I'd be interested too, I'm in Montco. Where is pickup for this? If I get in will be 2-3 bags. Great choices!

    Grainfather!!

Yeah that will make a difference. Two thoughts, one, do put lid (and towel on lid) on top of grain basket in between pouring water while also tucking two hand towels around basket and boiler lip. Two, I also use lid and towel when I'm done with sparge getting to a boil. Also, I always...

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Not sure about 4, but absolutely they never should've won last two. Makes you wonder what the narrative would be if they lost those two. I'd not expect that suddenly B&B are old or lost it, they did get there too and would both be close losses, but this overkill goat stuff..... Not so much...

    100 Batches or Bust

Good luck mate!! First time I got into brewing my brothers were as well, all 3 of us are today too, and I recall making a police siren noise to my one brother for crossing the 20 batch "limit". At 5gal/batch that met the "legal" level of 100 gal in a yr (well at least here in PA as I was told...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Cool, I wish you all the best and look forward to your thoughts on this. Have you seen the GF either in use or at your LHBS? If you mod this, let us know. I think others will be curious to hear your reports. Just saw you're from Bloomsburg! My daughter just graduated there with a nursing degree...

Grainfather mash tun questions - standpipe and mash screen ?

Ok, I figured if you'd have these issues you'd dough in well, but had to ask to rule that out. I don't know how ABV would impact mash. I've topped at about 8.5%, typically in the 5-7.5% range. I presume even at 11% you're not maxing out the grain capacity (though getting close!). Only other...

    Starter from last harvest

I'm not sure what "a mess on my stir plate" means. How in the world did this overflow occur? Were you in a flask? Was the flask, or jar, very full? My concerns on the above are if any contamination may have occurred, in which case while yes the batch is bubbling, you'll see if there was any...

Grainfather mash tun questions - standpipe and mash screen ?

I will open mine up fully to start and then turn off pump, see how it drains, always runs well. I then turn pump on (after only 1/2 or so of top plate drains off) and adjust valve to pump at ~1/2 rate, maybe a bit slower to start but by 10 min in, its opened up at least 1/2 way and some times...

    Grainfather!!

I agree with above poster, not sure about "locking". I just set mine on that upper ring. I pull the ring out after every brew to clean and dry well. If this were to happen to me, I'd stretch the ring apart. It should be larger than the diameter of the boiler and "clicks" into place firmly when...

    Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Ok, I am drinking this now side by side a SN Celebration. Wow, damn close! I was going by memory and well, not so good I guess, it had been awhile since I had one. Mine has a very slight more bitter back end taste (more on that later) with a similar malt profile, though I think SN is a little...
