Yeah, I've only used it once for a SMASH, which is about 4 days in to fermenting, but it started off quick , within the first 12 hrs. LOTS of krausen, filled an airlock already. I pitched it dry.

have to disagree, to a point. I have water going in to IC at full blast but restrict flow out, lets the water pull more heat out of the wort as it passes thru chiller. doing this has dropped my chill time from 35-40 minutes to 15 (5 gal batch, boiling to 70)

I guess, as most things related to homebrewing, its personal preference. But I will say a few drops for testing with my refractometer beats the several oz required for my hydrometer and my refract never tries to commit suicide as hydrometers are know to constantly try, rolling off the counter...
