    Pin lock vs ball lock

I use pin lock no complaints. Some of my kegs have a manual relief valve on the lid some do not. You can use any kind of tool to depress the gas valve post and it works the same as a manual pull relief valve. But I cant compare it to a ball lock cause I never used them.

Kettle screen options with plate chiller

I'd say the bag strains out about 85 to 90% or so. So yeah the false bottom is prob not needed. But I had it and just started using it when I did my new setup. I will still get some build up on the false bottom but not much. Pretty much I use it cause I have it. Also from some of the...

Getting enough yeast for 10gal+ batches

Good point I forgot I had this issue at first. I have a stir plates that are made out of cigar boxes. Costs almost nothing to make. But I used to have the top solid and just set my flask on it with no problem. So I cut a hole in the top and moved the magnets closer to the bottom of the...

Getting enough yeast for 10gal+ batches

Agree I bought 1 gallon growlers from my lhbs for around 4 dollars and that is what I use if I need to make a big starter. I also at times will harvest yeast and if it sets a while just do a small starter to check to be sure its viable. I have used yeast that's been in the fridge for over a...

Kettle screen options with plate chiller

I use a false bottom and a strainer bag for my hops. Kinda like a hop spider. Never had an issue with my plate chiller. And I leave only a few ounces of wort behind. I have my dip tube about 1/8 of an inch from the bottom of my kettle.

You Plug it You Plunge It

wife never asked me to plunge for her but if she did I would. Not a big deal done a lot worse for no good reason. Wife does anything and everything for me n I'd do the same for her. liked the post though, cause it made me think who would I be ok with plunging for. Besides the wife and kids...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

brewed 10 gallon of this back in august. Tapped my first keg yesterday. This beer is great. One change I made was I only added 2 tsp of spice per 5 gallon (soaked in vodka) after fermentation was complete let it sit for a week then keg. I used pumpkin pie spice from Penzeys. The spice...

AG brewing - do I need a lauter tun?

I would recommend to start with the BIAB also. When I started all grain I went with a cooler as a MLT. Worked great and no complaints about that route either. But my sister wanted to start brewing so we started doing mini mashes then went to the BIAB. I could not believe how simple it is...

how do you handle boil kettle trub?

I use a keggle for my boil pot. I have a false bottom with the dip tube in the center about 1/4 inch from the bottom. I also have a BIAB bag inside the kettle that I have stretched out with a couple pieces of stainless inside across the pot to keep the bag from closing. This will hold most of...

Is all grain is that much better or is it just that you have become a better brewer?

I have not done an extract batch in quite some time. I have nothing against them, made quite a few good extract batches, but going all grain for me is so much more exciting. I like all the experimenting with all grain, not that you cant with extract, but their is more options with all grain...

    First Brew Outdoors! Advice Please

def check the weather, I had one of those pop up shelters as a back up. and I also had a piece of duct work tin that I used as a wind shield for my burner. one big bonus for me is the extra space and being able to clean my equipment outside. Makes things real easy.

    Considering diving in to AG

I would not let the water quality keep you from going to all grain, especially if you have access to RO water. When I first started using RO water I thought it was a pain but after a while I got used to it and realize the benefits of creating a water profile to be beer specific. It also makes...

    Reusing Lager yeast

I use white lab yeast cause that's what my lhbs carries. I really like using the 830 the most. My second choice would be the 838. For the beers you are making I would think you are better off with the 830.
