First Batch on ferment, puzzling over discrepancy.

Was this a kit? I plugged your numbers into Beersmith, and 3.75 Lb of DME into 6 gal of water resulted in an OG of 1.028. Granted its been 20 years since I've made an extract beer. But I think you may need more extract. What temp did you measure your gravity? I assume you were using a...

    Paint for wood brew stand

I used Kilz for a base coat then sprayed krylon over the top of that. I don't think you need to be too worried about the amount of heat with those burner arrangements.

    Need replacement SSR and advice

check out the electric brewery, they have a great write up on their builds. I like their use of an oversized heat sink with both SSRs attached. Of course proper installation techniques go a long way for heat transfer. Such as screwing it to the heat sink instead of gluing it with RTV. I'd...

    What's in a CO2 tank?

Another good reason to participate in the exchange program instead of keeping and filling your own tank is avoiding the hydrotest fee. I mark my cylinder with a piece of tape, mark the test year on it so I can be sure to exchange it before that date. Never end up paying for a test that way.

Did I just ruin my beer?

No you didn't ruin it. Many bottlers will add yeast to finished beer for conditioning. Just give it time, make sure your fermentation is complete by comparing at least three FG readings with 2-3 days between readings, if there is no change observed. You know its ready to bottle.

    What's in a CO2 tank?

Don't forget to add shipping to that amount for a better comparison. That being said. The bottles are the same. In fact if I were you I wouldn't buy a new bottle. Since when you need to refill it the best prices on CO2 would most likely be at a welding supply outlet (airgas) that does...

    Oxygen exposure during dry hopping

Reading various posts on dry hopping and oxygen it seems that there is very little we can do to avoid it. There will be air trapped in the hops themselves when we dump them in. So start dry hopping while there is still some fermentation activity at the end and let the yeast metabolize what...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Do you have an ohm meter? It's easy to check a relay with a meter. Or you could plug a light into your socket, and switch it on and off by toggling the relay on and off. Just change the pin type from inverted to non inverted in the device list and the relay will change state. Do yourself a...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

After reviewing the photo, now I see how its wired. Changing color threw me, and a few others off. We're trained to keep green ground, so it looks lIke you've made a terrible mistake. But no, you've just changed color mid run. Sorry for overreacting.

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Its obvious from these photos you don't understand how a relay works. Think of it as a switch. the center terminal marked C is common. The terminal marked NC is normally closed, it is connected to common in an off state. the one marked NO is normally open it is not connected to common in an...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Yes, it's an electrolytic cap, so you have to mind polarity. Just identify the solder pads for the center pin (+) and the outer barrel (-) solder the cap to those pads.

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

I've found that the refrigerators compressor can spike the display when it switches on and off, to address that I soldered a 100Uf capacitor on the power input to filter that out. which solved that issue. But I still get occasional display issues I can't explain, such as characters where there...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

I don't see why you couldn't just run it directly on a laptop that's running Linux and not use the pi for your demonstration. I installed brewpi on my xubuntu box prior to completing the brewpi build and it ran just fine.

SvenF. When you installed brewpi did you download the legacy branch? If not you need to. Brewpi has grown to a point that they no longer are using arduino, but elkoe is still providing the software in the legacy branch.

using cocoa nibs and vanilla beans

Has anyone tried roasting the nibs before use? I was wondering if that would improve the flavor any. My 5 lb bag ordered from amazon arrived today so I think its a good time to experiment.
