Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Arrogant Bastard

I haven't corrected my water profile at all. I'm on a well and my water is very good right out of the tap but I have never had it tested. Maybe that would help. How much would the gypsum aid in hop utilization? As far as AA corection, I did take into account the difference and obviously...

Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Arrogant Bastard

I sent this beer to the Music City Brew Off competition just to see what it would do. I entered it in the Cat23A, Specialty Beer, because of the hop profile, which, according to Beersmith should be around ~95-100 IBU, which is too much for any of the related base styles like Old Ale. I scored...

    HERMS System Questions

Thanks, Dustin, that's exactly what I was looking for! I didn't realize that you can recirculate the wort through the entire mash. That makes more sense. But Dustin, it looks like you don't and only recirculate when the temperature needs to be adjusted. I like that. I will read through your...

    HERMS System Questions

I'm trying to understand how a HERMS system works. I've done some searching and find all kinds of material on how to build them and such but I don’t understand a few things about a some details and I’m hoping some of you guys can help out. If I have a HERMs coil in my HLT then I can...

    Ferm heater question

I use one of these: http://http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-100-MyHeat-Personal-Ceramic/dp/B003XDTWN2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/180-3298595-3769127 It's perfect for adding a little heat with a temperature controller. Since it has a fan also, it keeps the air moving. You can get the at Walmart for...

    Newbie All Grain Questions

like duboman said, your PRE-BOIL volume may not be enough if your trying to account for boil-off. I do 6 gallon batches and my pre-boil volume is around 8.12 gallons (because of evaporation, etc.) I usually boil 90 minutes so thats around a ~15% boil-off rate. That will increase your sparge...

Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Arrogant Bastard

OK this keg is almost kicked. This was a really good beer. One of my favorites that I've brewed. This was SOOOOO close to Arrogant Bastard. The problem was the hops. It started off with the bitterness of AB but dissapated quickly over time. I think my flameout hop addition wasn't...

Rock Hill / Ft. Mill Homebrewers

I was just wondering if there were any homebrewers here in this area that might want to start a local Homebrew Club. I know there's a good one in Charlotte and a good one in Columbia, but I was thinking about having something local. Just a thought, any interest?

How do you transition from 5G extract to 10G A.G. ?

You already have an 8 gallon pot, immersion chiller and carboys. I did my first AG with the exact setup plus a 10 gallon Home Depot cooler with a stainless steel braid. You can find instructions and details on this site. It's really easy. I made extract also for a while and I know you can...

Stirred my Wort on Third Day

If you're just starting out, read anything and everything by this guy ^^^^^!!! He set me straight early on! Once I have a beer in the fermenter, I don't even touch it for at least 3 weeks, maybe 4. I look at it every once in a while just because it's cool knowing that you made that. The...

The glasses you use for drinking your brews

I normally use a standard pint glass. My local craft beer store has some of Sam Adams specialty beers in 22 oz. bomber bottles and if you buy one you got a free Sam Adams 'perfect pint" glass except it was 22oz bomber size!! I got two of them and will probably get two more tomorrow. It's been...

    arrogant bastard

I wouldn't strain the hot wort into the carboy. I'm surprised the instructions don't tell you to cool the wort down to about 70 -80 degrees. I guess they are assuming that when you pour the Hot wort into the cool water it will cool it down? I don't like that. I think most "kits" say to boil...

    Batch Sparging and mashing

+1 on Denny's website. That where I learned how to batch sparge. Also read BobbyM's paper on batch sparging. He lays out a very good step by step process. I get 70 - 75 % all the time.

    Greenlee 7/8" punch?

+1 on what OMJ said. I have a 1/2" greenlee conduit punch and it works great. So much better than drilling with a step bit. They make a very clean 7/8" hole. I just installed two valves and two thermometers on two keggles. Took me about 15 minutes for all.
