First AG Brew in 10 Years

I brewed all grain for about 7 years, then took 10 years off. I am back at it now. My first batch I made a few newbie mistakes, but it was still beer. Brewed 5 11 gallon batches in the last 9? weeks. Brewing an oatmeal stout this saturday. Welcome back to the brewing! David :)

    anybody had saranac?

Saranac is good beer. They have a lot of variety. I drink it if I don't have any home brew. I pay 6 or 7 dollars per six. David :)

Has anyone here tried the 'doble-doble' double mash single liquor approach?

Sparge the rest of the grains and keep it for a small beer or starter. I wouldn't waste what is left in the tun. David :)

    Manifold Geometry Question

5/15 tubing with some holes drilled in it. Been using it for years. I have been getting about 83%. I don't know how it works on 5 gallon batches. I do 10 and its full to the top. David :)

    No Chill Case Study

I can report the Boddingtons clone I split with a new brewer. My 1/2 was chilled and pitched with S-05. I just sprinkled it on. He took the cube the next day and sprinkled the same yeast on. I kegged mine, he bottled his. I tasted his yesterday. Its more bitter at the end of the glass than...

How important is it to adjust mash pH?

I wouldn't use anything until you do a batch and test the PH of the mash. Why put something in your beer you may not need? A water profile would help you a lot if you are concerned.

    Will dryhopping help?

Hop flavor does come through, just leave an ounce of East Kent Goldings in a corny of mild ale for a few weeks. First it was just flower aroma, then after a couple of weeks the spice flavors from the hops. It made a good beer. The EKG are still in there. Its been 3 or 4 weeks. I'm going to...

Need some advice on scaling recipe up to 15 gall

My MLT holds about 22 lbs of grain (its a 1/4 keg) and I have a tough time making 12 gallon batches. Perhaps a bigger mash tun to match the bigger kettle? I use a 15.5 keggle. All I could boil is 14.5 gallons. Consider loss in the fermenter and you can have 2 nice 5 gallon batches. David :)

FWH Only American Style Ordinary Bitter

I think it will be fine. A simple beer is what you are making and what you are going to get. Trying the FWH is the best part, I use it all the time. It may or may not win an award, but you will have a better handle on FWH. David

    obtaining temperature

I have one I use for other things. If you are going to point it at stainless, you need a dull spot or it will reflect the laser back and not give a proper reading. Otherwise its a nice tool. David

    Yeast starter/stir plate theory confusion

OK, I read the whole thread. I think the guy that wants to know about how the 02 gets into solution can be explained. Look at the solution in the vortex. The center is being pulled DOWN. That also means the outside is going up. Just look at the mark on the side when the stir plate is...

    Erlenmeyer Flask Question

I boil it in the flask on an electric stove. If its a good flask, it should be no problem. If its boiled in the flask, I am SURE its sanitized. Before that, I sanitized a one gallon jug. I boiled the wort, cooled it some and poured it into the jug. Both work, but boiling it in the flask...

    How often do you brew?

I used to brew once or twice a month. I did extract for a while (5g) then switched to 11 gallon all grain. I Just bought a 7 gallon conical so I could do 5 gal batches to increase the variety, but I give away some beer and take it to parties, so ....... I still brew 11 gallons, but 1/2 goes...

    Safale yeasts

I have had good luck with S-04, not so good luck with S-05. One instance each. I usually use liquid with an appropriate starter. I hydrated the S-05 and think I killed the yeast. Ferment was slow and beer is terrible. Perhaps you could blame the brewer for that one. I made a Boddingtons...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I can't answer your question. I did find out the yeast will separate out once the water is added. Otherwise you will be waiting the same as your bear to drop clear. I have a conical, so I put the boiled and cooled water in the collection jar, open the valve and let it mix. It separates...
