    Philly Beer Bar Raided....

    1) PLCB controls the entire liquor sales meaning they have no competition, therefore no reason to compete with lower pricing. 2)Even though the PLCB is one of the largest purchasers of liquor in the world it passes absolutely none of the potential purchasing power savings onto consumers, it...

    Grimy Bottles???

2nd to the Oxyclean Free. Rinse the bottles in water to get off any loose junk then soak in the oxyclean for at least an hour. They should come out spotless.

    Excessive sediment in bottles

I have a lot of sediment in my bottles and it still tastes fine. My guess is that if you let the beer sit longer in the secondary(maybe 2-3 weeks) you'd get a lot less sediment.

Oxidation - Will even a little splashing will cause it?

If you poured it into the primary, those bubbles are probably CO2 and the CO2 blanket over-top the beer will protect it from all but the most vigorous agitation.

    Gray Foam - Damaged Kettle?

Did you clean it out thoroughly before using it? Taste the wort and see if it has a metallic taste to it(at worst you'll get some more iron in your diet), that might help narrow it down. The rainbow effect I believe is from oxidation so it could be that your pot just re-oxidized and what you...

    Beer makes mouth numb

If you want to rule out an allergy: take a full dose of benadryl about 15-30 minutes before tasting a sample and then try it. If you do not get the same numbing sensation it could indicate an allergy.

    Beer makes mouth numb

If you fermented the beer at 70F ambient temps then your beer could have been fermenting at 75-80F. The metabolic activity of yeast can raise the temps of the beer by 5-10 degrees. Many around here try to keep the ambient temps of where they ferment in the mid to low 60s so that at no point...

Is this good for my first beer?

Look at getting an equipment kit, it has pretty much all you need to start out with. Then you can add pieces as you move on to bigger and better things.

Can I use my bottling bucket as a secondary?

Hmm interesting points. My main reason for considering this was seeing if I could save money by racking to my bottling bucket to free up my primary for another batch(instead of buying another primary). The batch in the primary now I had plans to let sit for a month before bottling so until then...

Can I use my bottling bucket as a secondary?

Pretty self explanatory: Can I use my bottling bucket with lid as a secondary? Would I be able to just bottle straight from it after its done aging or would I just end up sucking a bunch of the sediment into my bottles? Anyone do this before?

    Did I infect my beer?

The FG is spot on but the beer was still very, very cloudy so I am going to let it sit for another 2 weeks before I bottle. Thanks for the reassurance. I am going to go drink a beer.

    Did I infect my beer?

So I took a sample of my beer last night with a sanitized measuring cup to take a FG reading after 1 week of no bubbling in the airlock. I looked today to see my airlock bubbling but very slowly(about 1 bubble every 2 minutes). Did I infect my beer and thats why I am seeing activity? Its...

Best way to get old beer labels off

Oxiclean will take most labels off in 30 minutes, at one hour the remaining labels came off with a rub of the thumb. Plus it cleans the inside of the bottles pretty well too.

Use of non pasturized honey in beer recipes

Speaking from a microbiological standpoint(rather than direct experience) honey carries little chance of contamination. The high sugar content prevents bacterial growth, much like the high sugar content of jams/jellies preserves them so any bacteria in it if made properly will be extremely few...

    My first recipe: YSP IPA

Oh I have no intentions of dumping it. It'll get drunk to the last drop. :cross: And I like bitter beers from time to time, cant drink them all the time but sometimes you just need to clean out your taste buds. :mug:

    My first recipe: YSP IPA

So this is my first recipe and I just tasted the sample I used to get my FG and it seems to have some promise. Thought I'd post it here for critiques and thoughts. I realize now to just go with the base malt extract and steep specialty grains so I probably didn't need the dark malt. I wanted a...

    stainless steel stockpot

I use that pot and it works wonders. You can do full 5 gallon boils in it. However, you must: a) watch it like a hawk because there is very little head space, 1" at best b) wait for the hot break to happen before adding hops or you will boil-over. I do ~80 minute boils, 20 minutes for the hot...
