Euthanized three gallons of beer. Having a pity party.

A pint raised and a moment of silence in honor of the lost batch.

    Grain Mill or Plate Stirrer???

My LHBS charges 1.00/lb for base grains. It doesn't make as much sense for me to own a mill. I'd buy a stir plate.

Ouch. Math hurts me tiny brain.

Can someone help me break this down?

HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!! Actually, that's pretty cool. Nice way to get your feet wet in building water without an expensive investment. Yes. I said getting your feet wet. See what I did there?

    Twist off's VS bottle openers

When you added your priming sugar, did you stir it? It may just be that your twist-offs were bottled first and hit the best part of the priming sugar. You should always stir when priming (just don't stir too vigorously and aerate the beer).

Can someone help me break this down?

I'd look for a good source of distilled or get an RV RO system. They can be pretty pricey, but it would be worth it if you really want to get consistent results: http://www.rvwaterfilterstore.com/WCRO.htm

    Alternative Cooling Methods

Are you sure you couldn't use a non-permanent solution like this quick disconnect? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQ7ZWE/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 If you're not sure, you can always ask your landlord. The worst he'll do is tell you no.

    My first GF attempt

Buckwheat is very nice for it. It can have a really nutty taste if used in high amounts, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Anyone doing a leap day brew today?

Was thinking about it but had to move my brew day to Friday. I'll be doing my go-to pale ale and my first batch of mead.

    My first GF attempt

I like getting some quinoa, amaranth, and millet. I rinse them and soak then in water for a bit, then toast then for a long time in low heat. In my opinion, it gives the beer body and a malty flavor without the sorghum twang. I still use sorghum extract, but in a much smaller dose, and I use...

    Sometimes more is too much

It might take a bit, but it'll tone down. Also, if it was ground very fine, you could be tasting some still in suspension. You might try storing one cold for a week and seeing if it is still as pronounced.

    Grain Mill or Plate Stirrer???

Mill is more important, especially of you don't have a LHBS that does a good job grinding grain. The Home Brewery is my LHBS, and so far I let them grind for me. However, I think you should buy a mill and build a stir plate. If I had a sudden cash inflow, I sure would.

    Alternative Cooling Methods

A pond pump should work, since your coolant should not come into contact with wort. I'd err on the larger side if I were you, though. Not so much to make sure it CAN push the water through, it also needs to push it through fast enough to be an effective chiller. I'd go for the best pump you...

    What yeast did you pitch?

    What's your profession?

I run the online banking, mobile banking, remote deposit capture, and merchant services support for a regional bank. And I host a radio show about beer. That's my REAL job.

    Lager temp problem

The consensus seems to be that warming it up is your best bet. It may not fix it completely, but it certainly won't hurt.

    Suggestions with a hoppy APA.

If you're confident it is not infected, making a starter will tell you it is viable. I'm not sure I'd know how to tell if it is infected without pitching it and taking the chance. I typically err on the side of caution, but if I were reasonable sure my yeast was not contaminated, I'd build a...

    Cleaning an older barrel

That's pretty much what I figured. My Dad's a woodworker, so maybe he'll make some crazy bar table out of it or something. Thanks!
