    SS Brewtech Unitank Issues

Thanks. I did send them a note so hoping they’ll replace it. It’s literally a hole. I don’t think it’s quite all the way through but it’s more than just cosmetic.

    SS Brewtech Unitank Issues

I seem to have an issue with my unitank's coil. I just received it this week and was going through the recommended TSP wash and noticed this on the bottom ring of the coil. It would not wash away and there is what looks and feels like a small hole in it. Any thoughts? I did also reach out to SS...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I think I would much rather go with this approach but like I said, I don't have the room in the garage currently for an upright freezer. Seems like it's not encouraged to carry either the SS 7 gal or CF5 when full.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Yeah, this is really my issue. I could get an upright freezer and put it in my basement but I am currently brewing in my garage. I'd then have to carry the fermenter downstairs which I do currently with a brew bucket. But that's much lighter. So for me I'd likely have to keep the fermenter in...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Do you guys have links to your builds or which did you follow?

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

For those using a chamber to control temp, has anyone found the smallest fridge or freezer that will fit the CF5 comfortably? I’m looking into getting either the CF5 or the SS 7 gal Unitank and not sure I feel like dealing with a diy glycol unit.

    National Homebrew Competition 2019

That's promising, at least some activity. Hopefully they'll load the Philly winners then soon.

Anyone know if Philly will finish up today?

    Fermentis Safale 34/70 Dry Lager

I pitched 2 packs of 34/70 without rehydrating at 53 degrees. I've brewed the beer 4 times with consistent results (including BOS out of 300 beers and winning a local brewery's Homebrew competition) so I wouldn't say rehydration is necessary but maybe it would decrease the lag time. I've turned...

Grounded Brewing Technologies 30A BIAB panel?

I bought a custom 50a panel in November. Received it in December and it's been awesome so far. I would highly recommend Grounded as the price was very reasonable for a custom two element panel. Rex was always responsive to all my questions and follow ups.

    propane to electric kettle question

Not sure what the prices are of what you are referring to but I picked up a custom kettle from the Spike bargain cave and had them add an extra TC port to it. Wishing now I had them add a 4th port but I'm very happy with the kettle and thought the price was reasonable for the quality.

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

Thanks guys, I have some leftover pex that I can make a better recirculation manifold out of similar to the SS version. Hopefully that will help distribute a bit better. Does that manifold just kind of float above the grain bed near the top of the wort volume? The grain bed definitely isn't...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

Didn't want to quote your entire message but thank you for the long thought out reply. I know the boil off component isn't necessarily tied to the efficiency of extracting the sugars into the kettle. I will adjust my equipment profile to get closer to the boil off rate so that should account for...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

Pre boil volume is the same as I manage that through sparging until reaching preboil volume. Post boil is definitely higher as I think I'm not boiling off as much as I throttle down the element power. I know that is impacting the efficiency as the equipment profile still had my old boil off...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

I run it probably medium flow through a Riptide pump. The temp probe is reading at the output of the RIMS tube and is set at the target mash temp.

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

Yeah I'm thinking my boil off is likely around a gallon now since moving to electric. I drop down to about 55 - 60% as well. I know that is a component but definitely not responsible for the 12 point miss. I think that may account for 5-6 points. The other must be from the mash.

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

I've generally run the mash at around 1.5:1. How do you return the wort when you recirculate?

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

I just recently switched to an electric system. I have a 5500W/240V element in my kettle and a 1650W/120V element in a RIMS tube. I recirculate through the RIMS tube the entire 60 min mash duration and have the return through a silicone hose running into the mash tun right around the top of the...

    Electric ventilation

Is makeup air really that big of a concern with one of these range hoods in a garage? I found someone selling new Haier 450 CFM wall mount range hoods for $80. Seems like a better solution that the mixing bowl DIY at that price. I'm fine brewing in a garage that maintains about 50 degrees in...
