One Thing After Another (First Time AG Woes)

I usually do 3 additions, 1.25 qt per pound sac rest a boiling addition to reach mash out, drain, sparge, drain. This way my sparge volume is never more than the mash/mash out volume.

One Thing After Another (First Time AG Woes)

I agree with Mr. Rotten, dont worry about hop material or cold break material in your fermenter. I believe it actually helps the yeast. But it sounds to me like you got alot of material because you didnt vorlauf you second runnings. I have sparge water ready around 175 deg and vorlauf and drain...

One Thing After Another (First Time AG Woes)

It does sound like you are experiencing "learning your equipment" woes. My first 3 brews were all over the place due to the fact that I had not learned the water volume needs of my system. You have many to learn. 1st is grain absorption, 2nd is mash tun loss, third is kettle evaporation loss and...

Questions on no-chill in a keg

Havent tried it myself, but ive heard this is how the Aussies do it, just not in a corny. They use a plastic airtight carton that collapses as it cools. As long as you avoid air getting in (suckback) as the wort cools IMHO it should be fine.

    Second Batch Not Panicking Yet

Welcome to the forum! IMHO if you plan on spending money on a carboy, buy one for primary. You can see everything going on. Once youve watched a few ferments you can tell it has started without krausen or airlock actvity. See the krausen fall and yeast settling etc.

First Time Recipes - What Was everyone's first time?

All grain biab Centennial Blonde.3 gallon batch, I ended up 1.020 post boil and only added half the hops I should have. It was pretty thin LOL, but good enough to buy a bigger kettle and get it right the second time! Even though I have 3 vessels now I still do this one biab. I now do it with a...

    saving leftover dry yeast

Make a starter and keep it in wort. It will last several months and multiply into enough for several small batches.

    Secondary and Infection

Agree with MaryB that just looks like yeast rafts to me

    Secondary and Infection

Dont rule out that the infection was in the primary and couldnt compete with the yeast. Once in seconday less competition

    Crazy Secondary Fermentation

Keep checking your gravity. If it is the same after a 4 day spread, your brew may be outgassing. Had a lager batch do that to me before.

Beer smells/tastes very boozy in primary

Ive had several batches with estery/off flavors/smells with us05 that I think were related to temp swings. More to the lower side like 62f. After long bottle conditioning periods they toned down, but that has kept me from using that yeast unless I am certain I can babysit it through the first 4...

    Fermentation Question

I believe S04 is a whitbread strain. Ive never used S04 but have recently done a porter and an amber with the wyeast strain. My porter had a similar gravity to your cider and was a low key ferment compared to what im used to. Look for a stopper leak, if not just let it go IMHO.

    Delayed Yeast Pitch Harmful?

I have read that the Aussies wait days sometimes before pitching. They use a plastic cube Carboy and flip it over on its lid. Sounds way wrong to me but it seems to work for them.

    HomeBrewSupply.com

I have always in the past purchased from a large internet supplier. I found out about homebrew supply here in the forum. I placed my first order with them last week to see how it would go. I try when I can to buy local and support Texas businesses. I ordered grain and yeast and all went well. I...
