Can't Decide - Flaked Oats or Barley in Stout

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to pick up the flaked barley. Also based on the comments, I think I will adjust the hop schedule as well.

Can't Decide - Flaked Oats or Barley in Stout

Tomorrow I am brewing a stout with the following recipe. I have been waffling back and forth between adding oats or adding some flaked barley for body. I like oatmeal stouts, but I know barley is pretty standard as well. If anyone has a reason for one over the other, I'd love to hear it! Any...

    Copper Coil Chiller Question

Well my chiller can now reach from the bottom of the keggle up over the side. Its also about 35' now. I had a roughly 5' piece laying around then I bought a10' coil and a few couplers. Probably overkill for 5 gallons, but now that I have the keggle I plan to do a few 10 gallon batches also and...

    Copper Coil Chiller Question

I am moving to a keggle but my current chiller probably wouldn't even reach the wort in a 5gal batch, so that is exactly what I will be doing this weekend. While I am at it, its going to go from 20' to 30-40' also. :)

    My yeast cultures/storage time.

I also harvest yeast from my starters also and have been happy with the results. It just seems far easier to me to make an extra .5L on my starter and pour it into a mason jar than to wash yeast post fermentation. Additionally, I tend to make stronger beers a lot and everything I've read on...

    IC pump question

Nice find! I will be curious to hear how this works. I've been wanting to do the same thing but haven't pulled the trigger on buying a pump. This looks like a super cheap option if it works.

Stepping up without decanting for yeast with low flocculation?

I would add more wort to the existing starter. It seems to me if you decant while there's still yeast in suspension, you're going to be primarily losing the least flocculant cells - which are the ones that are still around to get those last couple points and clean up.

    Fixes for leaking wort chiller

I went the route of adding more clamps... I now have 3 clamps, with the flat spot of the worm gearing offset on each clamp and it doesn't leak anymore. If you have a leak that you're trying to repair mid brew, I advise taking care to avoid dropping the screwdriver into the kettle, and if you...

    Cold Steeping Dark Grains

Well, this beer has come and gone and I've been meaning to post an update for awhile now... I was very happy with this beer and plan to make more real soon! It had a nice roast flavor that was mellow, very smooth, and paired nicely with the hop bitterness to produce a balanced beer. All of...

    Carboy "tilter"

I'm not sure fermenting at an angle will get you anywhere... You'll create a V shaped bottom and the trub/yeast will just settle in that and produce a flat surface which is simply thicker in the V. Tilting while you siphon works because the material is spread evenly on the bottom and mostly...

Labor Day = Brewing Day!! What you guys got planned?

Camping on the beach Saturday/Sunday. :) Monday I'll be harvesting hops and brewing a fresh hop ESB and drying the rest.

Will my beer get more hoppy with time?

+1 for dry hopping. If you already have cascades in the beer, they'd be a great dry hop.

cones and seeds on 1 plant

lol, sounds like I need to go neuter the plant tomorrow... The stress factor sounds like a definite possibility, in the PNW we've had a very cool / wet year. Except for the last week when all of a sudden we finally got our warm weather and hit the 90s last weekend. Is this permanent or is it...

cones and seeds on 1 plant

So I just noticed today that my first year Columbus plant has both cones and seed clusters growing on it. Down low its almost all cones, which I think is why I didn't notice sooner, but higher up there are tons of seeds. Is this a male plant? Or I've heard they can sometimes be hermaphrodites...

    CO2 tank plumbing

I think your challenge would be to find an airline that can withstand the high pressure side between the tank and regulator is about ~2000psi. You are probably better off making a hole in the side of the keezer and having the tank/regulator outside and the low pressure line coming in. With a...

What styles/recipes benefit the most from fresh hops

Styles that emphasize hop flavor and aroma will be best with the fresh hops. In Oregon there's a fresh hop festival every year and almost all of the beers are pales or IPAs - though you will find a few other styles in there as well. You should be able to use an existing recipe and just adjust...

    White IPA ( WIPA )

I believe the Boulevard and Deschutes versions are the same recipe so any differences would be from their systems or possibly water.

Cold steeping - adding early or late to boil?

When I brewed a cold steeped CDA I steeped them in my mash tun with the dark grains in a bag. After 24 hrs I removed the bag of grains, gave it a rinse and squeeze then simply added the balance of my strike water and mashed the light grains as normal. I know this goes against a lot of the...

Whats the best Beer you have had out of a Can?

I'd have to go with Fort George's Vortex IPA - its 16 oz can even :)

    Cold Steeping Dark Grains

I've been really digging my beers with a lot of late hops and along with the staggered additions I feel like I get a full well rounded hop flavor. The Beer Calculus site says its 80.5 IBU. It doesn't taste quite that big from the hydrometer samples I tried, but the last hop in the dark I had...
