First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

I measured after adding the DME and water, but before pitching the yeast.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Another smooth brew day. Just under 5hrs from start to finish (except that I still need to mop). I think I've hit on the combination that will work best for me: two pots for the mash, a total end-of-boil volume of around 4 gallons, and some DME and cold water to top it up. I now know that I...

Brewing with what I have: please help me make a serviceable 3 gallon batch

Thanks both. Revised version: 3lb golden DME, 4oz corn sugar, 1oz Cascade (30mins), 0.5oz Ekuanot (10mins), 0.5oz Ekuanot (0min), with the us-05 yeast. 30min boil. Beersmith says 1.044 OG, 4.6% ABV and 37IBU, which still all seems reasonable. I know/hear very little about ekuanot. Might it...

Brewing with what I have: please help me make a serviceable 3 gallon batch

Before I next go to the LHBS, it looks like I'll have a window to make a 3 gallon batch with what I have on hand. The problem is that it isn't much: 3lb golden DME (could go up to 4, maybe 4.5, by tweaking a big stout downwards a little), 1oz each of ekuanot, cascade and amarillo, 0.33oz of...

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Another batch today that went pretty smoothly. 9lb of grain, 5 gallon boil (across the two big pots and a third saucepan contributing another useful half-gallon). I stuck with mashing in two separate pots and bags. I think that 5lb in a bag is convenient to handle in a way that 10ish would...

Dark Mild Mild Mannered Ale (AG) (E) UK/US

Thanks Monkeymath. It's an interesting question where the boundary lies between following a recipe or not. Given my curent level of expertise, there's a good case that I can never claim to have followed one: I know nothing about my water chemistry, ferment at ambient temps (although I choose...

How many gallons brewed in 2019!

    4973 + 5gal best bitter = 4978.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Successful brew day. All well under control the whole time. 6hrs total time, but I wasn't rattling through things as quickly as I could. I overshot the OG (1.055 vs. 1.043) which is partly because I very slightly undershot the final volume but mostly, I presume, because my efficiency turned...

Dark Mild Mild Mannered Ale (AG) (E) UK/US

The milds I've made in the past (mostly using extract) have come out on the thin side. If these come out a bit thick and sweet I won't be too disappointed as I'll at least have a window to work with. Assuming that the 1968 is locked in (which it more-or-less is, without messing up the schedule...

How many gallons brewed in 2019!

    4714 + 3g dark mild = 4717.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Yep, it's not a brew-day limitation, it's a carboy one. I have two primary buckets then an array of 3- and 5-gallon carboys I use for secondaries. Given what's in the pipeline I had to make one of those four brews a 3-gallon batch. The plan is that this 3-gallon one also provides a good lot...

Who's NOT making IPAs and what are you brewing?

Brewing a dark mild right now. Next three will be a best bitter, an imperial stout and another mild. Brewed but not yet bottled I have one I've just labeled beer (made from what I had around, an american amber perhaps?), a rye beer, a blonde a wheat IPA (which is probably disqualified from...

Dark Mild Mild Mannered Ale (AG) (E) UK/US

Brewing this as I type. I'm doing it as per the 5 gallon AG recipe in the second post, except I've scaled it down to 3 gallons (without being especially careful to get it dead on) and am using Scottish Ale Yeast (Wyeast 1728). I also have the ingredients for a 5 gallon version ready in a few...

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Yep, the partial mash is a re-do of one of the first ones I did on returning to the hobby. The original had 1lb 2-row (along with various other bits and bobs) and 9lb DME. I've kept the recipe the same, except that it's now 6lb 2-row and 6lb DME. So, even if the first one didn't have enough...

What I did for beer today

Trip to the LHBS. Ready to go on two dark milds, a best bitter and an imperial stout over the next couple of weeks.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Yep, I got the DME-at-flameout tip from the LHBS when I got back into the hobby and have been doing that (mostly; I think I put some fraction of it in earlier with recipes where the mash had hardly anything in it, but I've moved away from that now). I was there again today and picked up the...

    British Ale Yeast Question

I think a partigyle is beyond me at the moment (I had no idea what it was when I first read your reply). Sounds cool, but one at a time is already enough to keep on top of! The golden best is a good idea. I've seen a Timothy Taylor Landlord clone while randomly clicking links here and that's...

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Successful brew day. Five and half hours from getting the first pot out to finishing clean-up, and that also included a load of laundry, a game of chess with my kid, and lunch for both of us. I confused myself about how daunting it was going to be. The 14lb was the original recipe, but I...

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Yes, definitely a two-potter. I haven't worked out the details yet, but I'll mash in the 3- and 4-gallon pots, and then generally squeeze and dunk elsewhere while boiling in those two pots and adding the runnings in.
