    High Final Gravity

I brewed many, many extra before switching to AG. I typically had the same problem. Making a starter and maintain constant temperatures were the two things that seemed to help me most. 4-6 weeks should be plenty of time for a typical "normal" gravity beer. +1 on searching the site for...

    Starter

I do it all the time. As long as the ratio stays the same, the gravity should be the same as well.

    High Final Gravity

A starter is almost always a good choice. It makes sure you not only have healty, active yeast, but helps you to keep from underpitching which can stress out / overwork yeast cells. Are you doing all grain or extract? How long are you waiting to check FG? Are you getting a good amout of...

My first ever homebrew is bottled! Pic inside.

Looks great bro! You are right about the clear glass. Make sure you keep them somewhere dark. You would be amazed at how quickly light can turn them into a skunky smelling cheap import!

    Another DYI Motorized Grain Mill

Here is some photos of my newest project. I got most of the parts from the scrap heap at work. Had to make a couple changes: Motor was too small. I upgrated to a 1/4 HP. It has the needed torque to handle a hopper of grain. Half the fun of homebrewing is the DYI projects. DYI...

    Question about magazines

I believe there are 8 issues a year. One should be coming out pretty soon. They are excellent magazines. The DYI projects are great too.

Need some help: Off flavors and a string of bad batches

Definitely going to chunk the plastic, but I'm leaning towards high fermentation temperatures. I have a temperatured controlled chamber, but didn't use it either time I've had the issue because I had a lager in the chamber. Have brewed about 4 lagers in the past year (55 deg) which have all...

Need some help: Off flavors and a string of bad batches

I always get nervous using bleach, but I think you may be on to something. As far as plastic, I've got an autosiphon that is close to two years old and is probably due for discard. I replace tubing about every 4-5 batches. I am using the same bottling bucket that I've had for 2+ years. I...

Need some help: Off flavors and a string of bad batches

Yooper - Each bad batch was brewed with a different water source. The dunkel was a store bought spring water and the Pumpkin was fresh from the Flowing Wells Spring we have rolling out the the hill down the road.

Need some help: Off flavors and a string of bad batches

Just a little more information, both of these batches were fermented a little warm, but nothing extremely high ( 74 degs). I used Danstar Munich for the Dunkel and WLP 002 for the pumpkin. Pumpkin ale was in a primary for 2.5 weeks, and in a secondary for 2 weeks. Sanitation habits are using...

Need some help: Off flavors and a string of bad batches

Just as it says, I'm on a string of off flavored, bad batches. It really started back in about March with a batch of Dunkel. The dunkel was kegged and and on first draught, I immediately smelled a plastic like aroma from the glass and the same taste followed. I'm not really good with...

Splitting batches to solve maltodextrin debacle??

Glad to hear the IBU experiment came out good. I think I may give it a whirl. I've heard that New Castle is actually a blend of 3 batches. I'm going to keg this stuff anyway. Maybe it will give me a chance to let one keg age nicely before its all devoured.

Splitting batches to solve maltodextrin debacle??

Yesterday I brewed another extract dunkelweizen. This is the 3rd or 4th time I've brewed this recipe, and always love it. The recipe calls for 1 lb Maltodextrin. I used to be concerned about 1 lb, but it always comes out really nice, so I go with it. WELL, yesterday we went to take an OG...

$$ saving idea - what do you think?

I've read lots of washing posts but haven't recalled any that use starters to propagate multiple batches. I think im gonna give it a try. Glad to hear others are doing this. Any cautions or tips from experience?

$$ saving idea - what do you think?

Just thinking about a cost savings idea today on yeast. I'd like to get some opinions. Here is what I'm thinking. I would like to try taking a smack pack or dry pack and divide it two or three times and make stir plate starters from each division. Then decant, and possibily repeat the...

    WTB Corney or two

The majority of ball locks are Pepsi. Pin locks are Coke. Edited - 1234 is correct. Had a slip up there.

Beer disaster while I was gone.

Thats a really good idea. I had a heating pad in there til I discovered it auto shut off after 2 hours. I put a house hold lamp it there with a 45 watt bulb to do the trick til I came up with something better. Was doing great until that towel fell off the carboy!
