What is used for fermenting 10 gallon batches?

For years I open fermented 11 gals in a sanke with the top cut off. It was also my HLT. I needed help moving it. Then I bought a 7.5 gal stainless conical. It makes life so much easier I switched to 5 gal batches. BUT now that my family has had my beer for Christmas I got a second...

Is a conical worth the $$$ at this stage?

I have been brewing for 20 years. I just got one 7.5 gal stainless 3 years ago. I simply love it. My girlfriends children all pitched in and bought me another one yesterday. Its the way to ferment beer. Everything about it is easier. I have to move it around the house to keep the temp...

    Dry Yeast equivalents

I have switched back to dry yeast for now and Safeale is a big part of the reason. I also went from open ferment in a 1/2 keg to a sealed conical half as big. Just getting the hang of it. I do 6 gal partial mash with full boil instead of All grain with a huge liquid yeast starter. Its kind...

HELP! Ran out of propane 40 minutes into boil

The last time I did that, I snagged my neighbors grill tank, he was not home. When I put it back he pulled in the driveway to find me on HIS porch. Not a problem, but funny. I would just throw the hops in and let them steep. Chill and ferment normally. Yeah, relax, don't worry, have a...

Finished at .998. Tastes a little like cider, more like green wine. Check again Jan 1s. Yeast is dropping out. David

    conical fermenters..

I have not had a wife for a long time. It IS my girlfriend and her children that are getting me the fermenter. Its the gift that keeps on giving. :ban: They like my beer. I have also switched to partial mash because I don't want to spend all day brewing like I did with all grain. Make...

    conical fermenters..

Two years later. I am getting a second fermenter. Love the 5 gal batches and the fact that I can handle them by my self. Basement where I live now keeps fermenter at 58 to 65 depending on where I put it. Got an american ale in the conical now, wanting to brew a dark German ale next. I...

    First Time Plain Ol Cider

Girlfriend likes sweet wine, so I think one needs some more sweet. After a week, they went down to 1.00 or even a little less. Tasted pretty bitter. (dry?) Still in the glass. Thanks for the replies. David

    So who's brewing this weekend?

First brew in a couple of years. Taking a step back doing a partial mash due to where and how I live. Making a full flavor ale. Dry extract, Crystal and a little bit of chocolate malt ground up in the maltmill. Leaf hops. 5.5 gallon batch instead of the usual 11. I have all day. :)...

    First Time Plain Ol Cider

I was told I could get fresh cider for $2.75 a gallon. I gave the guy 2 sanitized glass carboys. He had them filled. Cider was awesome alone. OG 1.050 I added wine yeast nothing else. Checked it a week and half later, Gravity about 0 or 1.000 Tasted bitter. I did not want high...

    Who uses Wyeast a lot?

All I have available is Wyeast. I like the smack pack because it proofs the yeast. I always make a big starter anyhow. Been washing and saving the yeast in small canning jars, so I only need to buy yeast now and then. David

Need to remove my gravity sample?

You can leave the sanitized hydrometer in there, but I found it gets all gunked up and hard to read. Not really worth it. I mostly go by time and temp. If its at the right temp, the beer will ferment. The beer is usually done (for ales) in a week or a little more. Leaving it sit for another...

Best Starter for a Propogator Pack

I think the pack will be fine in a 1.6 litre starter on the stir plate for 36 hours give or take. You will get a good start. Watch out for the 1084. 11 gallons crawled right out if my converted sanke fermenter with o2. I use foil instead of an airlock. Drinking it right now. DAYM its good!

    After a Fifteen Year Break

9 years for me. Its like riding a bicycle :) The first couple of batches I made a few newbie mistakes, but the beer is better than ever. David

How many all grain batches until you got a winner?

First AG was a good one. I had already been using liquid yeast and had the rest of the stuff nailed down pretty good with extract. I still screw one up now and then. David :)
