Looking for suggestions ,visiting La Trappe and Cologne where else to go ?

I wholeheartedly agree with the last two posters. Koln is certainly nice and one could easily spend a day+night there, but if i had a friend going in the area i'd tell them focus on dusseldorf, not cologne.

What Brunwater profile for a Czech Lager?

thanks for this tip Martin, I just noticed that feature the other day on my supporters version but failed to realize why one would want to do that.

took me awhile for the name of the town to come back to me. Mechelen is really nice and just south of antwerp. we spent a couple sunday afternoons wandering around there, really nice old town.

    Cream Cheese Kit from FarmSteady

I have done this before and was super easy, but got busy when our second kid came along and haven't in a few years. I just requested some books from the library, my homebrew shop sells cheesemaking stuff so i think i'll skip the kit.

Looking for suggestions ,visiting La Trappe and Cologne where else to go ?

maybe check out Val Dieu. it's a small abbaye brewery with a little cafe near the germany/NL/BE three country point border. their quad is on-par with westvletern in my opinion (i've had both fresh on-site). it's within biking distance of aachen and maastrict, and that area has some beautiful...

I didn't get into that area at all honestly. I think most of it is kind of an industrial area and not that great. It's only a hour or two by train from antwerp to bruge or ghent, dont limit yourself those places are great!

west of antwerp: Ghent is really nice, Brugge (or also called bruges) is amazing. I visited it in all seasons and preferred fall/winter as the crowds were lower. I lived in aachen germany for a few years not too long ago and it's a nice town worth an afternoon on the train line to cologne. I...

What Brunwater profile for a Czech Lager?

pilsn water would be the true example of the style. however I'd have no problem making a pils with your water as is. You could bump up the SO4 by adding gypsum and get up to 100ppm, that would accentuate the hops a bit more and some bohpils can be up to 35-45 IBU. if targeting a full mouthfeel...

Spice tincture for per-pint dosing... advice needed

I brewed a belgian holday ale this past weekend. I skipped adding any spices to the wort and have the idea to make a concentrated tincture with some anise and mulling spices, then I could just add a few drops to the glass if i'm looking for the spiced version. i'm just curious if anyone has...

    Slow Start with Yeast Slurry

it's the slurry needs time to wake up, I just experienced this yesterday as well! I almost always make starters as i'm using slurry thats 1-3 months old and even though I use the correct volume of slurry given it's age and the beer OG i'm pitching into I give it a 500ml starter to 'get it going'...

Fermentation Chamber. I may be crazy.

sounds like it would work to me. I wouldn't bother venting the exhaust though, that will just be result in more cold air being pulled inside your box. just dont stick your head in there right away and take a big breath when you open it up. :)

    Bru'n Water water profiles

the color/mouthfeel profiles are just that. targets for a certain type of beer, yellow/dry for an IPA, black/full for a stout, amber/balanced for a nice amber ale. by looking at these you can start to understand how the various components of a water profile affect the mouthfeel and flavor. The...

    Please Provide an Experienced Recommendation

have you considered no-chill or overnight mashing? those both work to save some time on brew day for me, or at least make it so I can get the entire 5 gallon brew or part of a 10 gallon brew done at night when the kids are in bed. It's allowed me to keep it up despite many other demands with two...

Anyone else not buy retail beer?

I've only bought beer only twice in the last 2 years, each time it was a case of cans to take camping. :)

    Chocolate Rye Stout

looks pretty solid to me. I haven't used chocolate rye yet, but i do 4% malted rye in my dry stout and it adds a nice little spicyness which is great.

vittle vault 35 pounder, anyone use it?

That is a great idea! Those gamma lids will work on any bucket? in fact I already have a ton of 5-gallon pails around so this sounds like the route I should take, and buckets are inherently stack-able.

vittle vault 35 pounder, anyone use it?

Anyone using the rectangular vittle vault 35# container to store grain? Can you fit most of a sack of grain in there? The other option is the stackable 40# vault, but those are also really huge, almost space is a concern for me, and I just bought a 50# vittle vault but it showed up and I...
