Very little activity after using starter. (Pitched 10 hours ago.)

I think I made the starter to early (My first time doing one.) as it had very little activity when I pitched. The day before the airlock would bubble aevery 1 or 2 sec. Did I just make it too early and now I basically did a pitchable tube where it may take a day or so? Most of what I have...

    Yeast starter question.

Okay, I plan on using it tonight. I have just one more question or would like to get your opinions rather. I used one of the methods described in the faq. Quote: Originally Posted by Rhoobarb I use a 1/2 gallon growler from a brewpub similar to this one. I fill the growler about 1/2...

    Irish Moss

The Brown Ale I am brewing this weekend from Midwest has Irish Moss. I'd like to know what everyone thinks also.

Not all the beer made it to secondary, fiddle with it or leave it?

I used to concern myself a lot with this when going to the secondary. What I found out is that my auto-siphon sits above the yeast cake in most cases and didn't really pick anything up. Besides that you are moving to a secondary and it will settle out anyway. Just my opinion (And I am still...

    Slurry Question

Wow. I was thinking it would go longer. I actually was just looking at the calc and didn't think about changing the date to see. Thanks!

    Slurry Question

I was thinking of saving some of the slurry from my Oatmeal Stout to pitch in an Imperial I have coming up. My question is how long will slurry keep if I have it in a growler in my fridge?

    No head, Nicely carbonated...

What's the water like that you are using? Is it tap water? Also, if the fermenter you are using is a plastic bucket then it has piss poor ability to dissipate heat. I would cool it more in the pot with an ice bath and the go to the ferm w/ ice water. Yeast is tougher than you think. I...

Easiest Way to Transport Secondary Glass Carboy - FULL

Yeah, I know. I just always joke with people about doing that. It always looks so gound in the 5 gallon.

Easiest Way to Transport Secondary Glass Carboy - FULL

I don't think there is anyway to move it without shaking it up some. I would suggest using this and just empty it. :ban:

why does the pitch amount matter?

I've been told about 1 cup of slurry per 5 gallon batch. Does that sound about right?

    Yeast starter question.

Well, they didn't have them in and wouldn't until Friday so I went with a 2 liter growler and airlock. I'll just boil and cool in a stainless pot I have and pitch to the growler. I guess I can always use the growler to put some slurry away from the oatmeal stout I have going to use in the...

why are kit instructions so horrible ?

I like the instructions that Midwest gives better than my local home brew supply. Most of their kits have you drop your specialty grains in and bring to near boiling and remove rather than steep at 155 degrees for 30 min. I'm not sure that there is a problem with that as they have turned out...

    Yeast starter question.

Right. I have an old Coleman camp stove I can use if I have to. Would rather use the stove but if it isn't 100% safe I won't risk it.

    Yeast starter question.

Last dumb question (Doubtful). Has anyone ever tried boiling with a Erlenmeyer Flask on a ceramic stove top?

Are northern brewer's grains pre crushed??? need a response quick

The default with Midwest is crushed on their order form. Not sure about Northern Brewer.

Krausen forming on one side of primary?

    Yeast starter question.

I don't have any DME but a buddy told me that if I get a glass container of some kind and boil it to get it sterilized it should work. Just follw the directions for making a starter and lay some foil over it. Will this work or should it be under an airlock? I can run buy a local place and...
