Is double crush a waste of time?

So, I brewed an Irish Red Ale on Sunday afternoon. The Wilserbrew bag is great. It is tough, fine meshed and shaped just right. Using a single .030” crush on my Cereal Killer and the Wilserbag I got 80% efficiency on my mash. I’m plenty happy with that.

Is double crush a waste of time?

I no longer ask the LHBS to double crush. I bought a Cereal Killer and set the rollers at .025" so one pass is all it takes. In fact that seemed a little too fine. I got a lot of trub on my last brew. But then, my bag is very coarse too. I bought a Wilsrebrew Bag and it is much finer and whole...

Pitched a sloppy slurry 4 days ago

It has been 7 days since I pitched the slurry, the airlock is still burping about once every 2 minutes or less. I decided to check the FG, it came in at 1.011, projected was 1.012. The OG was projected to be 1.056 but came in at 1.058. I'm happy with the numbers, I'm just curious as to why the...

Pitched a sloppy slurry 4 days ago

So when you pitch a slurry, do you just pitch as is, or do you make a starter?

Does harvested slurry behave differently than original?

Whenever I have used a packet of Nottingham yeast, including the one I harvested from, it takes about 6 to 8 hours till I’m seeing airlock activity. It picks up speed till the airlock is a constant bubbling and continues for two and a half days then slows till it stops by the end of day three...

Don't Rehydrate Dry, and Don't Aerate Liquid Yeast?

Interesting! The lazy part of me likes this. I have only used dry yeast. I have rehydrated some batches and have pitched some straight into the fermenter. I have sprinkled several batches on top and sealed the bucket, others I have stirred well after pitching. I have shaken the bucket...

Pitched a sloppy slurry 4 days ago

I made a very light SMaSH, 3.5% using Nottingham yeast and saved the slurry. When I ran the boiled wort through a CFC I let it drain into my fermenter through a 200 micron filter shown below: After 2 weeks in the fermenter I transferred it to a keg and left 1/2” of beer behind. I swereled the...

Is this Brew Bag too coarse a mesh?

Thanks for the info. I’ll order a Wilserbag. Good point about other uses for a coarse mesh.

Is this Brew Bag too coarse a mesh?

I bought this at a LHBS. It seems to be quite a bit coarser mesh than the one I made out of voile curtain material. I sold that one along with the rest of my brewing stuff when I moved. This bag is plenty tough and well constructed. Do you think this material is too coarse? The 3 brews I have...

$10 in-line regulators at manifold instead of multi-body regulator at CO2 tank?

Thanks. The mini regulator is very easy to set at a desired pressure and it holds it. When I snap the knob to the lock position it always jumps 1 psi. No problem, just expect that and set it accordingly.

$10 in-line regulators at manifold instead of multi-body regulator at CO2 tank?

Here is my adaptation using one R1401G mini regulator and two 3 way manifolds. The main regulator is set at 25 psi and feeds the manifold on the right side. The right manifold is for soft drinks and sparkling water. The mini regulator steps this down to the left manifold for beer. The...

    Fermentation Time

In my experience the actual fermentation only takes 3 or 4 days. When I first started brewing I would pull a sample when the air lock activity stopped and it would be at my FG. Then I would close the bucket and let it set another 10 or 12 days before packaging. Now I just wait about 2 weeks...

Hitting preboil gravity but missing OG by 10 points

Are you sure of the volumes? The calculations are correct. If you started with 7.5 gallons at 1.046 and boil off 1.75 gallons to end up with 5.75 gallons left in the kettle you should have a OG of 1.060 +/-. However, if you boil off less than 1.75 gallons and leave .5 or .75 gallons of trub in...

Is double crush a waste of time?

When you do a double crush is because the rollers on the mill are spaced to far apart to get the fine crush that BIAB brewers prefer. So it’s just a way of getting a little closer to the desired size grist without having to readjust the mill. Brew shops don’t like to readjust their mill for...

    Kegerator for motorhome

Add this to any Corny Keg: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N59U5JE/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 My experience is they foam a quite a bit. There are other options with a picnic tap so you can have a length of hose to eliminate the foaming.

First BIAB (first all grain) Schwarzbier. Tons of questions (RO water, hops ...)

One piece of equipment you may want to add to your collection is BeerSmith, http://beersmith.com/ I believe the price is $25. Many of your questions can be answered by entering your recepie into the program. There are profiles for BIAB that will help with water volumes. It appears that the...

Help with BIAB Process and Switched Water Source - Beer Tastes Different

I feel your pain, before I moved I had my own well, 175 feet deep clear, clean and tasted good. I don’t know what the composition was, other than high calcium, but it made great beer. Now I’m on city water and the beer is ok to good, never great. I use campden but haven’t tried water additives...
