    My airlock is whistling

My experiment in the recipe forum I have a feeling it may get a little warm so I put a wet towel around it, the house temp is running about 78 today.

    My airlock is whistling

Continous stream of CO2, not even bubbles it is coming so fast. Going to have to ditch the airlock and go to a blowoff. I never heard the airlock make a sound before besides the gurgle of bubbles. I guess I better get to it before it repaints the room for me. SWMBO would not be happy.

    Air Lock Question.

Put the lid back on. It has fine holes in it for venting.

    Contamination

I did that the first time I put an airlock on the primary, no big deal. The yeast will out compete anything that may have gotten in when the seal fell in.

    Going to try something

So it won't be a brown ale unless one uses large values of brown, black as a terrorists heart. Have it in the primary and with correction the SG is 1.054. Guess it is going to be one for the wife as she likes a heavier ale than I do. I will do my best to consume my share however. :D Not the...

    Going to try something

Got to the shop and made some changes when the owner and I talked. Switched to an Amber extract and WLP036 yeast. I'm shooting for a brown ale. Some of the darks I've made while very good left me feeling like I had eaten a meal after a couple. The Pale Malt reference was an extract and I...

    Family bottling night

My son and a friend of his (both 17) are very intrigued by the brewing process. When it came time to bottle tonight they both showed up to help and learn. We spent the whole time talking about brewing and they had a ton of questions, starting with, "I have to wash my hands before we start...

    Using gelatin for fining

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. I owe you a cold one. :D

    Syphon tube

For mineral deposits just soak it in white vinegar for about 10 minutes and rinse well. Cost about the same either way but i have several sections of retired hose around now and that always comes in handy.

    Do Cheap Sanitizing Products Exist?

I've also put my bottles in the oven set to 200 degrees and let them heat soak for an hour or two after rinsing them, seems to work quite well. When I pull them out of the oven I put little tin foil caps on them until they cool and I am ready to use them.

    Do Cheap Sanitizing Products Exist?

Effective and cheap is hydrogen peroxide, I used to buy the quart size bottles for $2 or thereabouts. A couple quarts is enough to sanitize anything is sight, use it for the bucket or carboy then save it to do bottles later. I've since switched to Iodophor, not because it works better it is just...

    The problem with homebrew

is it tastes so darn good. When I have commercial beer I drink maybe one beer in the evening, but when I crack a homebrew it turns into 2 or 3 easily. I keep mugs in the freezer and end up with a pile to clean the next day when I get into the homebrew. :D

Converting an old CO2 Fire Extinguisher?

Save it for the day you need to quick chill some beer. :D
  17. S

No apparent yeast activity after 24 hours

Wait another day or 2 like RWN said and see what happens, the 64 F likely made them slow to start.

    Doing my first wine

Well, it is finally all in bottles, 21 750mL bottles and 3 16 ounce bottles for sampling to determine when it is ready without opening a whole bottle before its time. Now back to brewing beer...

Converting an old CO2 Fire Extinguisher?

Check the top of the tank for a hydro date. It has to have been hydrostat tested within the last 5 years. If it is in date it wouldn't hurt to have it opened for a visual inspection. some places won't fill them even then. If you have ever seen the aftermath of a tank exploding you will...

    Doing my first wine

Wine is a whole lot less work than beer, on the other hand, it takes a lot longer. But the wife will be happy and won't make any noises about the beer mess, etc if i make her some wine from time to time.
