    Yeast Nutrient??

+1. I use it, even in my starters, regardless of the gravity or the yeast brand. It's cheap insurance. Need is a strong work, but it can never hurt. When brewing, I add it the last 15 mins of the boil.

Getting frustrated and need some help

If you are getting off-flavors, Iodophor is not your problem unless you aren't using it in the correct amounts. Just running off and buying Star San won't cure anything. Both are excellent sanitizers. And I agree, beer shouldn't spoil in the keg, even if all the CO2 leaks out. Most times...

    # of kegs vs kegerator capacity

Four taps and 8 kegs that work, one that doesn't and is used for parts and another I converted to a fermenter. I'd like to get four more.

    Hello from Hoffman Estates, Illinois

Welcome. I work in Schaumburg, not too far from you!

    Looking for a burner

Ah, I didn't know that. See, there's the key. That helps in the dispursion of heat!

    Looking for a burner

The difference is it's more diffused across the bottom of an admittedly inefficient metal pot (S/S and Al), instead of pinpointing one area. You get more dispersion and, therefore, quicker heating time and a consistent rolling boil. Think of your stovetop burners - it isn't one flame at one...

    Old Peculier Clone

Are there really 4000 holes there? I've subscribed to this thread. OP was one of the first ales I had back in 1978 on a whim and loved it. I've wanted to try and brew a clone. For some reason, I've been thinking of it a lot lately and even looked up Old Ale recipes last week to try and do...

    Looking for a burner

Your talking one of these things, right? I know of a fellow brewer that picked one of these up at Lowe's b/c it was cheap. He thought they'd be good for 10gal boils and found that, yes, they were massively powerful but very inefficient. Maybe if you had a copper brew kettle, but for S/S and...

Schwarzbier May The Schwarz Be With You

It was great drinking it flat! Yes on the dark malts, although there is just a hint of roast flavor in the finish. And yes, for chloramines. As you probably know, you can let water sit overnight and it will dissipate the chlorine. Chloramines, you can't get rid of that way, nor can using a...

Help change the color of this Irish-style beer!

Jim lies; I'm not that great a guy.;) But I'll take the compliment - thanks, Jim! Yoop, I'm, late to the party here. The recipe Jim speaks of is in my recipe drop-down. In fact, I'm about to empty the keg and need to brew another ten gallons ASAP. It's pretty popular around the house. I...

Bars of Madison, WI (go badgers)

I go up there every year in February for a model train show and it is a tradition to stop at Great Dane for dinner and to grab growlers to take home. Furthermore? Never seen it in the Chicago area. Maybe the OP has, but not me.

    Looking for a burner

I've been doing 10 gal. batches for some time now and have decided to start using a gravity-fed set up. I've done a lot of reading on burners on a lot of the HB boards and decided to get the Bayou Classic SQ-14 for my boil keggle and use my current (cheap round burner) to heat my HLT water...

Schwarzbier May The Schwarz Be With You

I brewed this on Oct. 25, 2009 and after lagering at freezing temps in the garage for the last eight weeks, I put this on tap last night (Jan. 11, 2010) to carb up. I pulled a sample, had a taste and I have to say that this is a winner! Just enough roast character to know it is there; it...

    Is this dangerous

You should be fine. I brewed last Saturday in an unheated garage! The high was, as Nigel Tufnel would say, 11. I wouldn't have brewed except that I was under a deadline. A group of local brewers will be filling a bourbon barrel with this stuff on Friday. Anyway, I kept the garage door open...

Please HBT community, help me before the SWMBO forces me to quit!

So far, I doubt that any of the answers I've read here are the true root of your problem. I believe it is very likely the hops you used or a sanitation issue. You mentioned using StarSan, but in what quantities? If it is the hops, that will go away with time. Many times EKGs will give you a...

    Dr. Pepper Stout

I'm much more inclined to believe it is a hoax most likely perpetrated by one of their competitors. Kind of like the "workers pee in Corona beer" hoax of the 1980's. If you've ever tasted prune juice and Dr. Pepper side-by-side you'll see they are nothing alike. I'm very interested in seeing...

    Before I purchase this kettle...

15.5 gal. keggles are perfect for 10 gal. batches. The only reason I got one was I wanted to move up to 10 gal. batches and my 40qt. pot was too small. I now use it for an HLT. Just last Saturday I brewed a big Dubbel - biggest grain bill and pre-boil I'd ever done. Pre-boil wort going into...

    Yet Another Keezer Build!

Wow, good job! Looks great. How long did it take you?

    Oats

I use them on my brown ale. See my recipe drop down for "Silky Brown Ale". But as stated earlier, they'll work in just about any style. Wits, some Belgian ales, etc.
