Three gallon Duvel Clone? Hop bill??

It is a six gallon recipe so if you are planning on brewing three gallons just cut everything in half.

    Boil video 5500w element

That's a nice boil! I am planning an electric system with a 30 gallon pot, doing 15 gallon maximum batch size. I was wondering if I would need more than 5500 watts but it doesn't look that way. Running 10 ga instead of 6 ga will save me a pretty penny. Thanks!

    Mixing yeast strains

When I do a psuedo-lager, like my Oktoberfest Ale I use a 50-50 mix of S-05 and W-34/70. I try and keep the ferment as close to 60 degrees as I can and the result is a very clear, crisp beer. YMMV

    Belgian Dubbel Style Cider

I subbed the lactose for the white sugar in the syrup. If you try this be aware that lactose has a lower boiling point than sucrose so your syrup will reach the various color stages at lower temperatures than if you used all table sugar. The reason I subbed some lactose in the syrup is lactose...

Apparently I have evil gnomes stealing the bear out of my primary...

I am disappointed. With all this talk of beer/underpants gnomes and no South Park references? Anyone could tell it was Cartman stealing the beer and blaming the gnomes, that little bastard.

    oktoberfest kit?

I don't have lagering capabilities either, so I use a clean ale yeast like S-05 and ferment as close to 60 degrees as I can. S-04 would give you a maltier beer, but it would have to be fermented cool or it would get fruity. What I have been using lately is a 50/50 mix of S-05 and W-34/70. If you...

What's a good oktoberfest beer to brew?

When doing psuedo-lagers I have good luck with a 50/50 mix of S-05 and W-34/70. Ferment in the low 60's and they come out crisp and clear as a bell. One of these days I will do a proper Oktoberfest but until then this yeast combo works well for me.

    Mystery Recipe

My first suggestion is that if it has been a while since you bought your ingredients you will need a yeast starter to make sure you have enough viable yeast. If you go to yeastcalc.com it will give you a pretty good idea of what you will need to do for a starter depending on the age of the...

Move to 10 gallon batches with minimum equipment-advice?

"Moving to a new house on a well so water usage is a concern." Not a problem. All you are paying for is the electricity, not the overhead of a municipal water system. So pump away.

The beer that got you into beer

It used to be Old Style and little else until years ago (before Miller bought them out) I bought as 6 pack of Leinies Bock. It was an eye opener, beer didn't have to be yellow, and it could have flavor! It's been a long strange road since then. Now when I look at beer in the store I have a hard...

St. Louis Summer Tea - Cheap, easy, tasty!

I just thought I would let you know that my tea turned out really good. The wife loves it and even though I am more of a beer guy it is hard to resist on a hot summer night down by the river. Thanks for the great recipe! I will be sure to be making more of this in the future :)

    The gods must be crazy

I have a five gallon mash tun and it is a bit small but I can still make some pretty good beer. The biggest problem I have is hitting my mash temp. The tun is usually so full if you are high you stir like crazy and keep the lid off hoping the temperature will eventually drop and if it is low...

    Mmm, Smoked Barleywine

If it were me I would plan on letting this one bulk age on the port soaked oak in the secondary for a while.

    Do I need specialty grains?

It would be helpful if you would post your recipe, Kind of hard to tell what ingredients are in the beer you are planning. As far as the pearl, it needs to be mashed. Any base malt needs to be mashed, you could steep them, but it would be a waste of time for the most part. There are no stupid...

    Maibock Without Temp Control

I brewed a batch of Northern Brewer's Rye Maibock this spring. I don't have a way to lager, but fermented in the low 60's in the back of the basement using a 50/50 mix of S-05 and W/34-70. It turned out pretty clear and crisp without any fruitiness that I noticed. Not that I have the most...

    Fallfest Ale

It is getting that time of year again, starting to think about beers for the fall. If I could lager, it would have been a couple months ago. So it will be an Oktoberfest style ale again this year. I brewed a couple batches last year based on BeirMuncher's OktoberFAST Ale. They turned out pretty...

    Heat Stick Problems. Need help!!

When I built my heatstick I didn't like the way the coupler nut held the element in. I picked up a large stainless washer, I had to grind out both the inside and the outside to get it to fit over the element and inside the coupler nut, but it made for a nice, tight and clean looking connection.

    Need some wiring advise

Start with a 60 amp GFCI spa panel. Beer isn't worth killing yourself over. After that, any panel with a heavy enough switch and relay to control the power to your kettles.

    Has anyone tried caramelizing lactose?

Last fall I threw together a four pound batch of homemade syrup from the directions in this thread,https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/20-lb-sugar-jar-yeast-nutrient-114837/. I subbed a pound and a half of lactose for table sugar and it made some pretty darn tasty syrup. I made the double cooked...

Does home malting produce good beer

Does the grain need to be dried after the malting process, or could it be used green and put right in the mash tun?
