Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks for the info. If I go that route, it will be with a upright freezer using my Kickstarter Fermostat (LINK) temperature controller once it arrives. That also means buying an upright freezer. The more I think about it, I may just get a larger chest freezer and skip the conical, especially...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

You have me thoroughly intrigued as to the missing question 4! I am a tad jealous of your Portland location and ability to: 1. Check out the equipment first hand 3. Avoid Shipping costs 4. Avoid Shipping costs My questions to Wrox are how did your Citra re-brew turn out and what do...

    Fermostat frermentation controller

Huaco, If one of your suggestions was the removable media SD Card stretch goal, well done sir, well done. I think I like that even more than WiFi. I have become distrustful of devices with built in WiFi since getting the WiFi version of the BBQ Guru for my smoker a year or so ago. It seems...

Oh, the temp probe goes IN the fermenter!

I did. A smack pack of 3068 in a 1.5L starter. I'm not overly concerned but it gives me a reasonable excuse to re-brew it with proper temperature control to compare. I was glad I split up the brew day given how long the double decoction took. Given that I avoided a stuck sparge with 50% Rye...

Oh, the temp probe goes IN the fermenter!

Short story long, this was a brew weekend of personal firsts: 1) I brewed a Roggenbier. 2) Given the high rye bill with Pilsner and Munich, I also performed my first decoction mash (double) along with an infusion step (111 F to 131F) :rockin:. 3) Taking a cue form Gordon Strong's book...

    Fermostat frermentation controller

I feel your pain. I always am late to the party on KS. First Kickstarter that I got in early enough for an early bird and it was pure luck after reading a 2+ month old thread on AHA and searching KS. Hopefully, Caleb keeps everyone in the loop on the production schedule and ETA.

    Fermostat frermentation controller

I was the last one in on the early bird. It is good to hear solid reports. ETA of November, so it will be awhile before posting hands on updates.

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Wrox, So, the Kern River Citra clone may be the best beer I have brewed. It has been in the keg around 4 weeks and is probably at its peak right now. Aroma is fantastic and it dried out very nicely (I tend to prefer a dry IPA or DIPA like Firestone-Walker). Very drinkable and hides the...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Yup. I have looked at the reducers but don't think I want the extra space between the tee and the MLT return. I will be matching as much as I can elsewhere. I will probably have a 1.5" TC ports in place of the thermowells on the HLT and BK. Save $$ on the thermometers and have one less tee to...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

That must be the case, as John said their ports all use the 1.5" TC flange. It certainly gave me pause before ordering any SS valves and the like. With 1/2" hose and barbs, I am going to have flow reduction anyway, but it is a pretty big deal ordering an instrument Tee what the flange size is...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks. For some reason, I was under the impression that the 1/2" and 3/4" TC fittings shared the same flange size. I am planning on using the butterfly valves where I can. With your pumps, are you moving hoses around or using three-way valves? I am leaning towards using the 3 way valves...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

It is similar with late hopping of Citra with some Amarillo and a 3 step dry hop. It is a "Can You Brew It" recipe that has been getting raves. A pretty good listen on the Podcast and a great beer from the sounds of it. The Citra/Amarillo seems to be a popular combination in Denver, with New...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Lucky devil. As much as I would love to revisit Portland again (last there in 1997), I am not sure the wife would go for a cross country drive from Wisconsin to pick up brewing equipment and she sure as hell isn't going to let me go alone to Portland! Good to know the lead time on the order...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

I got a very quick turn around from John to my questions. He said that the TCs that they use are all 1.5" and that most of the pipe size is 1" (the tangential returns are 3/4" pipes). Should make life much easier with the accessories.

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Thanks. I just sent John a list of questions. I heard that the HERMS connection was smaller. From your previous posts it doesn't sound like you have had an issue with mash recirculation so I am guessing it is not a major issue. By the way, I see you are conditioning and tapping the Citra...

Wroxbrew's 20 gallon stout tank build

Wrox, I was about to Email John, as I am getting close to pulling the trigger on my tanks (may add to 14.5 Conical as well) when I thought I would ask you first. Are all of the Tri Clover ports, with the exception of the element port, on the tanks 3/4"? I am looking to pair components from...
