I lucked out getting this....and can I use this as a keg??

Sell it and buy a keg. If its in good condition it is a decently expensive piece. But then again you found it at a junk yard.

    Where to get a keg?

Easy solution: 1. Buy a full keg of whatever you feel like drinking 2. Invite friends over 3. Float Keg 4. ??? 5. You now own a keg shell.

    Shipping dry yeast

That's about what I was thinking. They have been in the fridge since I got them so they should be fine. If not oh well. I'll use the one I have 3 of just in case.

    Shipping dry yeast

I usually use liquid yeast on all my batches, but Midwest has been sending me both liquid and dry the past 5 kits I've ordered. The only thing that concerns me with using these is that they were shipped in the kit box and not iced down like the liquid yeast. How well do the dry yeasts hold up to...

    Sanitizing a carboy advice

Exactly what I do. Make up a small batch and use it over and over until it starts running low then make more. I usually have 2 gallons and a couple small spray bottles hanging around.

    Can't drink anymore.

Sorry to hear man, I'd buy this stuff off you but shipping it all the way to Tennessee might be too cost prohibitive. Good luck on the medical stuff and as others have said, this isn't the only hobby. If you can't kick brewing, do it to give to friends and family. Also to boiling off the...

NB Bourbon Barrel Porter vs. AHB Whiskey Barrel

Midwest makes one also, I have it sitting in the secondary right now. Truthfully I don't think you will go wrong with either of them.

    Kegging bloody Marys???

Be prepared to do some hardcore cleaning of the keg and possibly replacing orings. I personally hate bloody Marys but when I bartended I was told I made an amazing one. The smell of the tomato juice was extremely difficult to get off of the rubber mats and the steel shakers.

How big for my first yeast starter?

You will be fine with a one liter starter. I used a 1 liter on a beer with a 1.075ish OG with no issue. Personally I think the Mr. Malty calculations are a bit excessive for most beers, but then again it is really hard to over pitch (relatively).

    Homebrew head

I don't really know about abv but my 7.2% India brown ale gas great coronation. Try leaving the bottles in the fridge for a week before opening. That allows the co2 to go into solution better which should help with retention.

    Homebrew head

How long are you leaving the bottles in the fridge? I've noticed a week or more in the fridge helps. Also if you leave them at room temperature to carbonate for a 3 or so weeks it helps. My last little thing I have picked up and it may be a coincidence but full boils helps with the retention.

    Caribou Slobber FG???

I almost felt this one was almost too sweet. I think maybe another half oz of bittering hops would have helped.

    Caribou Slobber FG???

As others have said, that is what it's supposed to be. It's a great brew. I want to say mine finished around 1.014-1.016. It was my second brew and turned out great. I had a few that I just drank last week after being in bottles for almost 3 months and they just get better (as all beers...

Cleaning Bottles - Too Much Bleach

I use either PBW or oxyclean. I just cleaned about 80 bottles over the past two days and after a couple hours of soaking in oxyclean and water the labels fall off. Some need a little rubbing by hand, but between that and rinsing they come off real easy.

    Wort Chiller or Ice Bath?

You should be able to fit 50' worth of 3/8" copper in a single coil (mine is that way), but yes double the surface area would roughly make it twice as efficient. Heat transfer unfortunately isn't that easy, but for brewing round numbers are more than adequate.

    Wort Chiller or Ice Bath?

Any rib cage chiller will be just as efficient as a normal one with the same diameter tube and length of tube. Where most of the faster perceptions come in is probably due to it being more spread out in the wort. If you don't stir while cooling down the rib cage style will be faster, though if...

    Fermenting temp to high

You will be fine. It might create some off flavors, but more than likely you won't notice especially since it's your first batch.

    Lazy Magnolia

Love it. I'm a big fan of most their beers. Their kolsch wasn't the best, but I'm a big reb ale fan. As I said in the last lazy magnolia thread one of my good friends grew up down the road from them and he couldn't say enough about them.
