My UDS! - Let me know what you think!

Inspired by the meat pr0n here I became obsessed with getting into the smoking game. I highly recommend the UDS - easy as pie to build, I did some BBQ chicken to start off and am planning pulled pork and a whole chicken this week.

It's beer! - First AG batch

My Brother in law and I brewed a batch of Common Room ESB this weekend. It was my first AG brew, and he isn't a brewer. Two problems that arose: I missed the mash-in temp, something like 9° low, so I just used Beersmith to figure out an infusion to bring it up to temp (nailed it). I'll...

    New Brewer In Pittsburgh, PA

Welcome, I'm a Pittsburgh Brewer myself -- been at it for nearly a year. Planning my first AG batch this saturday :-) Indeed, RDWHAHB (or a craft beer since this is your first batch) Be patient, it will pay off.

Oxygen - good find on craigslist?

I followed up, they want something like $250 for it. Too rich for my blood at the moment. if it's a full tank, I guess I would shell out $100 for it if it would work for as many batches as you all say. . . Thanks for all the input.

Oxygen - good find on craigslist?

This sounds like more trouble than it is worth.

Coleman Xtreme 70Qt - deadspace question

Great - reading around, the consensus is that a quart of dead space isn't the end of the world, and there will be grain taking up some of that space anyway. Glad to hear you like this for five gallon batches, I was beginning to worry that it might be too big for 11# of grain.

Oxygen - good find on craigslist?

I'm looking to improve my aeration/oxygenation -- Do you think this would be a good CL find? I know zero about O2 tanks. How much would you pay for this if it is? http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/hab/2535993865.html

Coleman Xtreme 70Qt - deadspace question

This is my first MLT build, I built a copper mainfold with a simple design, and I am getting about four cups of deadspace when I test it out, is this a lot? Any tips on how I might improve the design?

    Transitioning to AG - help!

Ah - I think I have my answer in BobbyM's All-Grain Primer - page 9 - once again, thank you Bobby.

    Transitioning to AG - help!

I just finished building a manifold for my Coleman Xtreme 70QT and am excited to take the plunge into All Grain! Currently I have one burner, a keggle and the cooler (and my old 3 gallon boil pot from the kitchen) Do I have enough to start AG with batch sparging? I thought I was in...

getting started in all grain brewing

Best of luck to you. I'm prepping for my first jump into all grain too. Slowly worked up to a keggle on a Bayou Classic and just finished up the copper manifold for my Coleman Xtreme 70qt mash tun.

    Brewery upgrades - 2 questions

BTW - is there any downside to a bigger starter? I may have gotten a bit over excited when I made my first starter on the new stir plate.

    Brewery upgrades - 2 questions

I'll try pitching the whole shebang and see how it goes. I guess that explains why my last batch was on the small side. I had about 5.5G in. Thanks.

    Brewery upgrades - 2 questions

Slowly but surely I'm upgrading my brewery. I built a stir plate and have a starter underway for my upcoming brew (not gonna get stuck with bad yeast again!) Q1: When I'm ready to pitch, do I just dump the whole starter into the brew, or should I be chilling it and pouring off the beer on...

    Ball Valve Leaking

I overtightened mine and had the same s l o w drip that frustrated me. My valve will shift if I put some pressure on it, but it's watertight.

    Effects of delayed innoculation?

Looks like I'll be starting off with the poor man's version. I have a hard drive and some computer parts hanging around here, I'll look into DIYing something later.

    Effects of delayed innoculation?

4 days, but I'm pretty sure it makes no odds. Good advice on the starter . . . I think that is probably my next investment. . . Is there a simple, cheap way to get started on starters without a stir plate?
