Trying to figure out half-size brewing

I have used Brewer’s Friend since 2013 and love it. Totally worth the annual fee if you brew frequently. BeerSmith is also really good per some brew buddies that have used it for a long time.

    this post has no purpose....

Well. If you find yourself stranded somewhere with some “business” to do… then you cant say you weren’t advised. Hah hahj

    Opinion/Experience with Imperial yeast?

I’ve been very happy w/ Dieter, Kaiser, House, independence, Flagship, Harvest, and Global seems to floc better than dry pitches of 34/70, but 2nd/3rd generation 34/70 catches up in terms of flocculation. I used to work at a LHBS and we sold a ton of Loki (Kveik) and Juice and folks really...

    Safe blow off?

It is probably fine. You could use an empty jar or big cup and lower the end of the blowoff tube to drain, then put the tube back where it was. The way you set up is fine. Just dont put the receiving jar/container too low on the off chance it starts a siphon. Ask me how I know ;)

What lager yeast in Sierra Nevada Lagers?

Of all the yeast strains listed, my hunch is that WLP940 and WLP802 will produce the closest to your desired end product. If you mash for fermentabilty, pitch at the low end of their temp range and are patient with fermentation, these two will produce a dry, crisp lager with minimal to no yeast...

Mishaps you are embarrassed to admit...but can here, we're all friends.

I got a Blichmann Bottling gun soon after they first came out. Maybe 2010 or 2011? I don’t recall. The first few years of use (Maybe 10 uses) the darned black tip on the end of the barrel wouldn't seal completely when I released the trigger to stop flow. So it was always an overflowing mess...

    pale ale too malty

While there are a lot of factors involved and I am not sure of your starting point, it sounds like some combination of: * Smaller %age crystal * Lower Lovibond Crystal * North American 2-Row instead of Maris Otter for your base malt * Adding a teaspoon or so of gypsum to the boil * Subbing...

Double IPA just started fermenting but seems pretty violently

Yes. After the 3rd or 4th day you should be in the clear.

Double IPA just started fermenting but seems pretty violently

Yeah. Just clean it up and refill with fluid. Then put it back.

    Lid exploded off the fermenter

Same thing happened to me a few years back with a batch of porter IIRC. Turned out fine. The bottom part of those 3-Piece airlocks get clogged easily. You can cut the tip of them w/ a utility knife to widen the opening. As already mentioned, a blowoff tube is a good option. These elbows work...

Are all grain KITS worth it?

If you have a place to store the grains, access to a mill, and plan to brew frequently— say once a month or more— then having a sack of base malt and a pound or two of various crystal and darker roasted malts is convenient. And probably cheaper in the long run.

    Old style IPA

I like a simple-ish American IPA with 2-row, a pinch of wheat or Munich, then assertive hopping with C-hops to 60-80 IBU’s. And some complimentary late kettle hopping. Bracingly bitter, makes a point, then the finish makes you want another sip. And doesn’t require a paragraph explanation

HBT inspired me to write a book.

On a related gaming note, for a few years, my club held a comp called “Mash of Wonder” where entrants rolled for ingredients with either 6 or 8-sided gaming dice. Maybe even 10-sided dice. I dont recall. Club members nominated 20 yeasts, 40 wild cards, 30 specialty grains/adjuncts, and 30 hops...
