    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

OK, I guess I am simply brewing extract kits with partial grains. I thought that was the same thing as BIAB. The giant bag of grains they send barely fits in the biggest mesh strainer I could buy when it comes time to strain them, and I guess I assumed that meant I was doing biab. The...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Seems like I recently read an article about how its not really the yeast that determines a specific taste in beer, most especially belgian beers....but Im just citing example, not trying to start a debate. But, to answer, Im using whatever yeast came with the kits. Its usually dry yeast...

Yeah, Im going to stop using LME also. Had no idea there were points against LME.

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Im straining to understand how you thought I used strike water with starsan mixed in?

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

I will definitely go to a meeting of KCB soon! It would be great to meet up with some people face to face, and a get a sense of how different people do this....

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

OK perfect! I will use the tablets and get rid of the bleach. Replace with PBW and more starsan. One more thought - would my water quality negate the use of starsan? Id read that hard water neutralizes starsan...and my solutions are cloudy, but tests on the strip at 2-3. Someone asked...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

OK, campden tablets ordered. I should add that Im not an AG brewer, yet. So Im not using strike water. and this brings up another issue which I'll explain here briefly, but I dont want to water down this topic. :) So with biab kits, Im supposed to start with 1 gal of water and steep...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Nope, wasnt aware. Wouldnt every municipality use chlorine to sanitize their tap water?

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Yeah, my city water is kind of hard....reads at 7-8 with ph strips and 424 on the meter. I did try using distilled water. A hassle for every brew day to buy 10 gals for each kit, just to be sure Id have enough. One gallon jugs, lugging it around...no delivery of 5 gal jugs from culligan...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

I responded after your post, but I think Ive got that part under control, with my shower stall setup. Although I do have a chest freezer and a temp control unit...but plans were to convert that to a kegerator.

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Here is my local water quality report for kansas city, kansas. https://www.bpu.com/portals/0/bpu_reports/2106waterqualityreport.pdf Ive bought a cheap hardness sensor and results werent too bad - 424 which is "marginally acceptable". I do have a fair amount of spots on dishes and the...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

Well, Ive had to do almost nothing about this, because my basement is pretty consistent in temp, always about 69-70 in warmer months and 60-62 in colder months. Humidity sticks around 50-60%, if the barometer is accurate. To boot, I have an old shower I converted into a fermentor chamber...

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

I guess I need to widen my homebrewing circle of friends locally, and on here, so I learn things like this. I just really had no idea. Even the "how to brew" book and companion website didnt elucidate me on that little tip. On that note, with partial grain biab kits, would it be ok to count...

    Confessions...My beer doesnt taste good

I have to confess....my beer doesnt taste good. Doesnt anyone else feel like their homebrew is very subpar to commercially produced beer? I mean, I hear guys on here say a lot, that their homebrew is great tasting. I know taste is subjective, but its hard for me to believe, knowing how my...

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

Ive never heard of it before now, yet youve always done it. Can I ask why you began brewing that way? Adding extracts towards the end of the boil?

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

OK, gotcha on both counts, that makes total sense. I just took a gravity reading sample and it seems normal colored in the glass but we'll see come bottling time. Thanks fellas.

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

Ive never thought of holding off until the boil is almost over to add my malt extracts. Can a guy do that? Without screwing up the recipe?

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

Love2Brew kit: 3lb pilsner malt extract 1lb wheat malt extract 2 lb pilsner malt 2lb white wheat malt 1lb flaked oats

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

They look like a cloudy dark orange IPA. I was expecting wheat-colored or Wit colors. I dont think Im allowing too much oxidation, but the dark color sets in during its time in the primary fermentor. Not after.

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

Have brewed several BIAB and extract white IPA kits now and they always turn out a lot darker than any commercial examples of white IPAs....anyone else have that happen? Is it normal? Am I steeping the grains too long or something?
