This is a good idea, and I'm trying it right now with a hefe I just kegged.

I didn't end up making any changes to the conditions. Today I pulled the first sample from the primary. Tastes clean and citrusy, with decidedly muted hefe flavors otherwise. I was really shocked by the smell (borderline stench) during fermentation, but now I would say...don't fear the sulfur.

So if you go full bore, does that negate all the concerns about matching the right male/female parts to the right inlet/outlet flow direction? Or is it still always more practical to have males on the hardware, females on the hoses?

Thanks for the input. That's the experience I'm getting right now. Glad to hear it cleared. I hadn't experienced this before either. That's why I'm wondering if I need to make adjustments now or just let it ride.

I used an unconverted 10-gallon cooler and 5-gallon paint strainers for a long time. I didn't even bother with the spigot---I'd usually have a buddy over, and we'd just set the grain bag aside and tip the cooler up into the boil kettle (hot side aeration be damned).

I don't see how stirring could hurt. It might break up some clumps, which would help efficiency. I stir occasionally while recirculating---I just make sure to stop stirring towards the end of the mash, so that the grain bed can reset itself.

For a direct fired system, I think the short answer to the equipment portion of the question is: A pot with a false bottom and valve A pump Some tubing to create a recirculation loop But as others have pointed out, there's a lot of ways to attack this.

As long as we're comparing these products... Any thoughts on which one drops the most sediment, most quickly? I use a boil kettle with a whirlpool and a side pickup tube...I'd like to go with whichever product would drop the most sediment in the boil kettle so that I can transfer the clearest...
