Day 5 - Is my Scoby looking OK and Kombucha fermenting correctly?

Not sure about the film I see on top. Our scoby covers the entire top of our container. You could just brew it and see how it tastes. The last picture from the side looks fine.

Ingredients - Help me understand how much to buy

Looking to understand the best way to buy ingredients b/c I'm moving to BIAB shortly. I plan to brew 5 gallon batches with the occasional 10 gallon batch to put in the bourbon barrel. I'll keg most and bottle 8-10 bottles of certain beers I plan to age. I prefer beers that are 6% or higher. I...

2nd batch. Help me tighten up

One of the first things I added to my brewing gear was a wort chiller. It's well worth the money. If you think you'll start brewing larger than 5 gallon batches get a chiller made for 10 gallon batches. I wish I did that when I bought mine since I'm going to all grain here shortly. I always...

    Dry hopping and cold crashing

I once let a beer dry hop too long and got the expected heavy grassy flavors. I'd like to cold crash the DIPA I brewed recently to clear the beer up a little and also to keep the siphon and keg from clogging. I plan to use 3oz of hops. If I plan to dry hop for 5 days and cold crash for 3 days...

    First time kegging questions

Thought I'd post a short update. Thanks to those who replied. I talked to AIH and they said not to worry about the gas tube length. I replaced all o rings and used one o ring per dip tube despite there being two when I got the kegs and there are no leaks

Reheating PBW and its shelf life

I mixed up 4 gallons of PBW in hot water for cleaning new kegs but wasn't able to clean them immediately like I thought I would. It's been sitting in a clean plastic bucket for a week. How long is it "good" for if I haven't used it yet? Will it keep it's cleaning properties if I reheat it on...

    First time kegging questions

I got two used kegs from AIH. While taking them apart to clean I found one gas dip tube was very short about 3/8 inch. The other one is about 2 inches. Does this matter? Secondly, both liquid dip tubes had two o rings installed. Should there be one or two? Do I need to reassemble with o ring...

Dry hopping with previously opened hops

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and tossed 'em in.

Dry hopping with previously opened hops

I came across two bags of opened hops in the refrigerator. Half ounce of cascade and half of chinook. They were from a batch I brewed recently and flat out forgot about them. They have been in the fridge, rolled up in their respective bags and then in sealed sandwich bags. Can I use them to...

    Carbonation temperature

Thanks for the feedback. It was around 78 degrees under the towel when I discovered the heat was turned up. Now it's down to 71.

    Carbonation temperature

I have 45 bottles of a 9% belgian strong sitting in a wine crate on my basement floor. The basement is typically between 62-65 degrees. I use a heating mat set on low underneath the crate and cover with a towel to help carbonation along. At some point over the last week or so my 3yo son must...

What's the big deal with kit brewing

Spot on advice from some vets here on HBT. I have friends who brew all grain and they make the best beer I have ever had. Period. In fact, they inspired me to start extract brewing. The beer I make satisfies ME and so far everyone who has had it. That's all that matters. This is MY hobby...

What does 300 billion cells look like?

When you build a fresh starter or harvest yeast from a previous batch, how do you know how many billions of cells there really are say just by looking at what's in front of you? This would likely apply more to harvesting and building a starter from that and saving part of the harvested starter...

    Still flat

Just throwing this out there and don't know if anyone posted this idea but... I had a red ale that didn't carb up for almost 5 weeks. I had the bottles stored in a wine grape crate and decided to put a heating pad under the crate and covered the crate with a bath towel. They all carbed up in...

Sanitation. How Do You Sanitize The "Tools"

Lol haven't heard that one before but if you approach it that way you should have few if any problems.
