Damn Airlocks ! But good post for Paranoid Noobs...

The last batch I made, the fermentation bucket was bubbling out from under the lid! 5gal batch in a 6.5gal bucket, even had a blow off tube installed (which was being well utilized). On a plus side, I now know the beer is a very nice bright orange color.

Fermenter has high pressure, lots of foam

You are correct, I must have been thinking of the 20' tubing. It was about $5 after tax. I'll edit my post above. I thought it sounded odd saying the LHBS was reasonably priced.

Air lock at LHBS: $1 4' of tubing at LHBS: $4 10' of tubing at Home Depot (just for non-LHBS pricing): $5 So, no, a blow-off tube isn't necessarily cheaper.

Extract batch with 2-Row in grain bill?

I made an extract batch this last weekend from a recipe I found that included a pound of 2-row malt along with a pound of specialty grains (crystal 15L). The instructions said to steep the grains for 45 mins at 149F in 3 quarts of water. Thinking this was just another specialty grain steep...

    5 gallon boils?

For those who CAN do a full boil (or near one) with extract, do you still recommend splitting up the extract additions for color/taste reasons? If so, I'm assuming the hop additions will need to be adjusted to prevent over-bittering?

What's the best way to dry hop???

5 gallon nylon mesh bag? I'll give that a go next time, as I happen to have a large nylon mesh bag. And I have to heat the siphon hosing just to get it to fit over the end of the siphon, so that's tight enough already. Is there anything that can be done about the lost volume of beer due to...

Keeping Thermometers in while you brew

Your second post is still as confusing as your first one.

    Sam Adams latitude 43

Yes, Ranger IPA is from New Belgium, and that's the beer that got me into IPAs. I went on a Latitude 48 kick for a little while, but eventually wound back up with Ranger. Besides, the labels come off of the New Belgium bottles so much easier than Sam Adams.

What's the best way to dry hop???

My first dry hopped batch, I put the leaf hops in the primary bucket without a bag. On bottling day, siphoning was a PITA, even with a muslin bag around the end of the auto-siphon. I got a lot of bubbles in the siphon line, which I can only attribute to blockage at the end of the siphon that...

Keeping Thermometers in while you brew

I wouldn't leave a floating thermometer in a brew pot in case it breaks. However, I have one that clips to the side of the brew kettle (http://www.midwestsupplies.com/dial-thermometer.html). I leave this in from when I start heating up my water until I dump the wort into the primary. On...

Anyone? This is being brewed up tomorrow.

    American IPA Stone Ruination Clone

A full boil with all the extract added at the beginning should still result in over 100 IBUs. Orangemen5, what was your FG, and what yeast did you use?

A great read on conditioning from MoreBeer!

No, I saw the date at the top (07/27/2012), so figured this was more recent. If this article is in fact older than his first publishing, then it makes more sense.

    Stone Ruination Clone?

I'm planning on making the BYO extract recipe this weekend (fourth brew), and have a question about about the late hop additions. The top of the recipe section says Stone adds their late hops in the whirlpool tank and steep at 200F for 75-90 mins. However, the recipes move the late addition to...

    Help with my starter

Good point. I use a stir plate, so it's not really a concern for me.

A great read on conditioning from MoreBeer!

The primary / secondary argument, and time frame for such, has to be the most frustrating part of my experience as a new home brewer. I've read many threads on here about there not being any need for a secondary, and even read an excerpt of an interview with John Palmer saying that a secondary...

    Help with my starter

I'm planning on brewing this Saturday or Sunday, so I'm doing my starter tonight and will let it sit on my stir plate for 48 hours (Friday night). Then it goes into the fridge overnight to settle out so I can decant the spent wort before pitching. So, according to that schedule, I'd start it...

Kansas Homebrewers - Proposed Law Change

Interesting... I didn't realize it was currently illegal for guests/non-family members to consume homebrew, or to transfer it outside of where it was made.

    Help with my starter

When the yeast arrives, look at the production date, then go to http://www.yeastcalc.com/ Enter your SG at the top, and change the Liquid Yeast Properties - Initial Cell Cout to 200 billion (for two vials). Enter the production date of the vials. Now, under 1st Step, select Intermittent...
