    SMaSH Hops Trials

Primary goal is flavor and aroma. Se ondary is bittering, I'm not as concerned about that, though. I am interested in seeing how much wash bitters, how big of a difference would I see in bittering taste one hop to another? I know each will vary in the amount they bitter, but if I add enough...

    SMaSH Hops Trials

I'm working on a 1gal SMaSH recipe to try out different hops, and looking around most recipes appear to have bittering hops at 60min. My initial thought was to skip the 60min hops and add at 10min, whirlpool, and dry hop. Is it a bad idea, or at least ill-advised to skip the bittering hops?

    Partly Covering Boil

I know it is best to boil w/o a lid on at all, however, testing a new pot on my stove to do 1gal batches I running into an issue with the vent dripping condensation back into the pot, and a weak boil. If I were to cover the pot about 1/3 to 1/2, with a lid or foil, would this have any negative...

Legally shipping home brew through FEDEX

I can say with experience, with FedEx at least, wine can be shipped with no issue, the a properly licensed account for it. Any other alcoholic substance, including beer, is at minimum against company policy. When shipping its easiest to just pack to if there is a leak it doesn't get noticed...

Legally shipping home brew through FEDEX

To my knowledge you cannot legally ship beer (or liquor) through FedEx. I believe it is only wine, and you need to have a special alcohol account with them to ship that. That being said, I've heard of beer and liquor being shipped, in unmarked boxes. I would say you could do that, and just...

How do you keep propane tanks warm?

I've seen heating blankets/wraps specifically for parpane tanks, although they seem rather expensive. I would conjure a guess that a heated blanket wrapped around the cylinder may work, assuming connectors were kept dry.

    Ground Spices in Kit

Instructions say to add during second fermentation. While I was researching how to sanitize, I saw other options, such as adding at the end of the boil or when bottling. I haven't found much on the order of ground spices and best practice on adding, so I haven't been certain how best to add and...

    Ground Spices in Kit

I had not thought of putting the spices in at the end of the boil until after I had pitched the yeast. Should I be concerned about infection just adding the spice to the fermenter? I was under the impression I should do something to sterilize the spice before addition to prevent infection.

    Ground Spices in Kit

Hi all, I got a Ginger Bread Brown Ale kit from AHS for Christmas, and brewed it up over the weekend. It has a packet of ground spices, which I'm not entire sure of how to best add it. I read up on adding spices and most use whole spices and I've seen recommendations of making a tincture with...

Is there a consensus on the 'best' plastic carboys or fermenters?

I just got a Fermonster myself. From the research I did they appear to be the best bang for the buck. I have not yet used it, however am overall liking it, and hoping to put it to use this weekend.

Use a Fizzics to save flat homebrew

The one we used did not have any sort of CO2 cartridge, and I didn't know they had a version using them, I thought they all used sonic waves. I think I may have seen some other brand that used CO2 cartridges to work more like a keg, possibly with mini kegs? It's been a while since I've seen it...

Use a Fizzics to save flat homebrew

+1. My brother brought one over at Thanksgiving he got as a gift to try out. I have my first batch that is under carbed, when pouring it looked more carbed, but had the same taste/mouth feel. We also tried it on some cheaper beers, which I'd did change the taste of, which some identified as...
