I mailed a couple of beers in, when do you expect we might hear the results?

    Split Batch Experiment

A few considerations... 1) given the very small batch size any variation in volume measurement or priming sugar measurement will be significant. I will measure the weight of each batch, then use the Specific Gravity of that batch to accurately calculate the volume. Since I'm looking for about...

Efficiency Calculations (cold break or not)

What is the best course of action for those who dump the entire contents of the kettle into primary (cold-break and all)? Should I take my SG reading in the kettle, and a volume measurement, then estimate how much I'm losing due to break/trub in the fermenter and adjust my brewhaus eff%?

    Split Batch Experiment

Thanks Voodoo, Peppers are an interesting idea, I might try some brown sugar or maple syrup and get another fermentation going. Sadly since I have such small batches I won't be force carbonating, so I'll just measure out the proper weight priming sugar (perhaps maple syrup for that one batch)...

    Split Batch Experiment

I just wanted to share a little experiment that I started a few weeks ago. I brewed a very simple very pale ale. Grain Bill: 13# Rahr 2-Row Pale Mashed at 154F Hops: 1oz Sterling @ 60min 1/2oz Sterling @ 15min The hops were from my fathers hop garden, it was nice to use up some...

    2nd All Grain Batch

Awesome, great work! For your next oktoberfest you might want to try a more traditional recipe (pilsner, munich, vienna), but if you are getting great results don't mess with success!

Very high efficiency on last batch

what was your OG? Looking at the recipe and assuming you collected 5.25G of wort, you should be around 1.060, which would seem more in line with your expectations. Are you confident in your wort volume? Did you measure this volume at sparge temperatures or room temperature? There is an...

    Just got my Barley Crusher.

No need to worry, conversations like this help us all learn about brewing. If you are getting good conversions with no stuck sparges, I wouldn't change a thing! For the people who might not be getting 100% conversion or are getting sparging issues, conditioning the malt is one of many possible...

    Just got my Barley Crusher.

tasq said it. Conditioning lets you crush the endosperm finer without shreading the husks. Finer crushing of the endosperm helps with your conversion efficiency (not to be confused with brew house efficiency). Better conversion efficiency equals more gravity points in the kettle Great...

    Just got my Barley Crusher.

http://www.braukaiser.com/wiki/index.php?title=Malt_Conditioning It would appear to me that the sparging technique shouldn't matter. The purpose of conditioning is to help with the lauter. When batch sparging you need to recirculate again to re-set the grain bed.

    Just got my Barley Crusher.

I over-conditioned my first milling with my barley crusher, made a real mess of things. Just did my second batch last weekend, ran it through dry and I got 77% brewhouse eff. and something like 93% conversion eff. Conditioning only seems worth it if you are going to crush much tighter than...

WLP001/California Ale and Primary Ferment Temp

Elkdog hit it on the head, my basement happens to be 60° right now and I only have room for 1 fermenter in my temperature controlled lagering fridge, thus leaving me 3 options... 1) Stop brewing in the winter (not a serious option) 2) Brew only with SanFran Lager, or German Ale (ALT) (I can...

WLP001/California Ale and Primary Ferment Temp

I recently brewed an IPA very similar to WCIPA with WLP001 @ 60°F, just racked it to secondary last night (2 weeks of primary), and it's clean and dry 1.010 (down from 1.066) which is slightly beyond the AA% WLP quotes. I attribute this to proper pitching rate, and oxygenation of the wort...

I'm brewing a pale ale tomorrow, can you please let me know if my water adjustments look right? Collecting 7G for the boil Starting Water (ppm) Ca 30 Mg 8 Na 15 Cl 30 So4 19 CaCo3 70 Mash additions: 2g Gypsum 2g Epsom Salt 2g NaCl Sparge...

    Starters, Air-locks, and Hydrometers

Let me preface my post by saying I know airlocks are not a good indication of fermentation. I just made a WY2206 starter yesterday, 1L on a stirplate (going to be stepped up to 2L). This is my first time brewing a lager, so I'm not familiar with the fermentation, but I would expect that...
