oh yea sorry. I misread one sentence. I thought you were saying you want to go all grain. Don't know what to tell ya man. I live in Vegas, so brewing outside in the winter is no biggie for me.
go with the pellets. You can either toss them in a nylon sock with sanitized marbles to weigh it down so you don't have to worry about filtering them out when bottling/kegging. Or you can just toss them in loose. Just tie a paint straining cloth to the bottom of your racking cain when your...
Yea, brew outside and dress reallllly warm lol. What I use is a turkey deep fryer. You can get one for around $50-$60. You can even look on craigslist to see if you can find one at a bargain. The one I am using now I bought brand new for $20 on craigslist. Or see if a buddy will let you...
Yea Six Rivers Brewery makes a pepper beer. I think they used jalapeno or serano chilies. They added slices of peppers in the boil and then dry hopped with peppers for a week in secondary. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure its good. I actually talked to the owners and brewing supervisor of...
did you check the gravity with your hydrometer before you racked into secondary to make sure fermentation was complete? It sounds like the yeast was still fermenting when you racked. No worries though, it will finish fermenting in secondary, but will take longer to finish and clear up. I...
ultra -- oh nice. Yea im 5 min. from you on Warm Springs and Jones. I got lucky with my coolor cause my dad has connections with local 7up center here so I got a cooler from them for like $50. I don't brew in the summer because it is too damn hot. I just make sure to brew enough beer in the...
I know this happens locally with brew clubs and what not, but I just don't see it working out over the internet IMO. High risk of broken bottles during shipping, shipping costs, beers not arriving where they need to go, etc.
I just rinse and shake 3 times, then toss them in the dish washer as I drink them. I don't wait until all of my bottles are empty. Then put the clean ones back into storage. But I don't have to worry about all that anymore since I got a keg system. :)
FYI: If you can afford a keg system, I...
Adding oxygen is only good right before pitching your yeast. Yeast need plenty of oxygen to reproduce and consume the sugars as fast as possible. After fermentation, oxygen is bad. It can spoil and change the taste of your brew, and not in a good way.
+1 on everything dcp said. Just want to add that seeing bubbles in the airlock isn't the best way to confirm that fermentation is taking place. I have had fermentation take place with zero airlock activity. So if you don't see bubbles in the airlock, it doesn't mean the beer isn't fermenting...
Sorry to bump this thread again, but since the whole racking to secondary issue has been resolved, I got another question.
Since Palmer says it is no longer necessary to use a secondary for most beers, is it better to use a bucket or carboy to primary for about a month? I know there are pros...
4 weeks is longer than usual for a hefe, but shouldn't have affected the taste if it was stored properly. Do you secondary in a bucket or carboy? Was your secondary stored in a dark room or dark area? If you use a carboy, it might of gotten skunked from too much exposure to light. Another...
Hey. This just happened to me Saturday night with a belgian IPA. I was only a couple points off from my FG in primary for 2 weeks, so I racked into secondary on top of 2 oz of hop pellets. I woke up the next morning only to see krausen forming again and my beer really cloudy. I am not...
