    Yeast Washing Illustrated

Baby food jars. That's all I have to say right there. I came to this thread awhile back and have since washed 4 different yeast strains. To say that's taxing on the fridge storage space is an understatement. I could buy those test tubes that white labs uses, or something else smaller, but I...

    My Craigslist score!

In that case, I'd convert the two SS kettles, one into your HLT with your sight/valve/thermo and the other into your BK. Use the turkey fryer pot for... I don't know? Turkey? :D I'm using a converted 5 gallon cooler as my HLT, 10 gallon for my MLT and I have a new 60qt pot for my BK that...

    My Craigslist score!

I also have a 30qt aluminum turkey fryer pot and I don't think I'd add a valve/sight/thermo to it as I don't think its worth it for that pot. What are you using for a MLT?

    Sam Calagione on "Beer Geeks"

Everyone on BA. It's why I love this site. The ratio of beer geeks to beer snobs is WAY higher. It's all been said already - I'm in the minority that doesn't like DFH's IPAs (they taste like dirty sock water to me), but I recognize the brewery for it's ethic and accomplishments and I know...

    Confused about Wheat

Yes, if you keg and cold crash it then force carb, the honey won't ferment because the yeast will go dormant. Just be careful if you decide to bottle any that later that it doesn't get warm. The yeast will wake up and you could have bombs.

    Confused about Wheat

I agree. I once used it as my priming sugar. I've also used maple syrup to prime. Just slightly detectable in both cases. Yeast are incredible.

    Confused about Wheat

Honey will ferment like a champ - there's no problem adding it to the primary after much of the fermentation has subsided. It won't attenuate quite as much and there will be a little residual honey characteristic. But if you're thinking that adding it late will improve it's presence, it won't...

    Confused about Wheat

Also, if you're going for more wheat flavor, I'd up the amount of wheat DME you use and lower the extra light. Muntons is 55% wheat, so you currently have 3lbs of wheat dme and 2lbs of light - which is about 1.5lbs of wheat to 3.5lbs of barley. The typical weizen has ~60% wheat. You could use...

You guys told me to buy one..now what?

When I was making 1 gallon batches with their equipment, I'd take samples as folks have said, but with sanitized EVERYTHING. Sanitized hydrometer, cylinder, wine-thief, etc. I'd then pour the sample back into the carboy. 1 gallon isn't a lot of beer and 3 or 4 samplings uses a LOT of that...

    Confused about Wheat

    The ratio isn't 5:1 - Wheat LME is not 100% wheat. It's 60/40 wheat/barley.

Nanobrewerys selling clones as their own

It certainly is possible - though even the large breweries blend batches to arrive at the right flavor profile. Whenever you're dealing with organic components and organisms doing work on them there will be variation from batch to batch and year to year.

Add grain to strike water or vice versa? Also, preheat question

I lay my thermometer in the bottom of it while I'm prepping for a few minutes. Since it's at floor level, it is usually a couple of degrees cooler than 'room' temp.

Add grain to strike water or vice versa? Also, preheat question

I use the same cooler as you. I do not preheat, but I use BrewSmith and I measure the temp of my cooler and of my grains before I heat my strike. I fill the cooler with the strike water, add all the grain at once and stir very, very thoroughly. I check the temp while stirring to make sure I'm...

how long will grain store and still be fresh enough to use?

The savings are so immense depending on where you get your grain that you'll pay for the mill in just a few sacks of grain. I just got a couple sacks of 2 row from a group buy here for ~$75? 68 cents/lb versus the $1.75 or so my LHBS charges adds up fast. I still buy a LOT of stuff from them...
