Best Method - Avoiding Oxygen While Transferring?

TAK - it sounds like you and day_trippr use a similar method. I've been using CO2 to siphon from a carboy to keg, and I fill the keg through the beer-out post (so that it fills from the bottom up), but I've never transferred into a sealed keg. Can you explain how you purge the keg and push out...

Best Method - Avoiding Oxygen While Transferring?

I use the exact same technique, but it looks like you have some nice refinements there -- can you explain how the mesh filter and stainless steel washer work? I assume it filters out the yeast & hop gunk and keeps it from getting sucked up the siphon? Does it ever get clogged? Also, when...

    Fat Heads Head Hunter Clone?

I've been working on a draft recipe for this, more or less following the recipe in the book, but modifying it for my little 5 gallon BIAB system. A couple of questions however: 1. What is the purpose of the maltodextrin? Isn't it redundant with the CaraPils, which is a dextrin malt? 2. Why...

    Question for indoor e-biab brewers

Is there any way you could set the pot on a cart and just wheel it under the pulley location? I've seen quite a few BIAB set-ups on carts. Something like this or this? I've managed so far to survive without a vent hood by brewing in front of a window fan.

Determing mash temp if none is given?

Thanks again. I'm not entirely sure why the malto-dextrin is in the recipe in the first place. I have Beersmith, but I don't have much experience with it yet. I tried to replicate what LLBeanJ did, but I'm not sure of the equivalent of Cara-Hell to use in the recipe builder?

Determing mash temp if none is given?

Thanks, guys, for the quick responses. I have a typo on the wheat and pils -- it should 8 oz. of each (1/2 lb.). Total grain bill is 12 1/2 lbs. of fermentables. Target OG is 1.068 and FG is 1.014. Yeast is White Labs WLP001.

Determing mash temp if none is given?

I'm trying a recipe I haven't tried before and it doesn't specify a mash temperature. Rather, to be more precise, I've seen conflicting information about both mash temps and mash times in the various recipes I've seen posted for this Fat Head Head Hunter clone. Given the following grain...

    Woodbrew's Electric BIAB Build

It's a Duda Diesel B3-23A from Brewhardware. The pump is a Topsflo 15PV 12volt solar pump source on eBay. It works great, but I wish it had some kinds of mounting bracket. Fortunately it's light enough to not put too much stress on the weldless kettle fitting. Ken

Order of Operations for a starter

When you guys boil in the flask, when do you add your DME? Before or after the water boils? I assume before, because adding it while boiling almost certainly will produce a volcano, not to mention the steam coming off the boiling water will make it impossible to pour the super-fine powder DME...

    Fat Heads Head Hunter Clone?

Weezy, or others -- has anyone brewed a clone based on CTownBrewer's recipe, or others? I'd like to attempt to brew this beer, because I like it so much, but I'd love to get some feedback on how these clone recipes turned out. Thanks!

    Woodbrew's Electric BIAB Build

Another brew, a few more improvements. As recommended by others, I built a stand for my plate chiller so that it could be used vertically. I also elected to circulate the wort through the chiller and back into the brew kettle until I reached near pitching temp, and then drained it from the...

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

I misspoke. They're actually made of silicone. Here's the link. They work great for squeezing the grain bag, but not as well for the hop bag which is full of boiling water.

Easy & Cheap Stainless Vent Hood

    kevreh's 4500w basement brewery

Nice! Really similar to my setup, including the smallish basement space. We even have the same pump. Luckily mine is in front of a window, so I can vent directly out the window with the help of a window fan. I like the wooden hood and control panel. Maybe you're neater than I am, but how do...

    Woodbrew's Electric BIAB Build

That's an excellent suggestion and exactly what I plan to do. I'm hitting the home store tomorrow to buy some lumber to create a stand for the chiller. I'll probably clamp the stand to the countertop while I'm using it, and place it at the edge of the counter so that I can catch drips with a...

Recovering from too high strike temp?

There's some great advice in this thread - thank you to everyone. One question - where can I find diastatic enzyme powder? Thanks.

    Plate Chiller Advice

I thought about this, but that's a lot of weight on a weldless fitting on my kettle. Instead, I should probably go ahead and build a PWM to control the pump speed electrically. My chiller does have the mounting studs, so I'll probably build something easy with a 1x4 upright and a 2x4 base...

    Woodbrew's Electric BIAB Build

Another improvement this last brew is the addition of a window fan. With both fans on high, I saw little or no condensation buildup on the ceiling above the window. Essential for brewing in summer humidity in the basement.

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

I tried squeezing it, but even with neoprene gloves, it's too easy to scald yourself. I think I can release it from the spider and clamp it to the side of the pot while it drains and then, as you say, dump it. BTW, thanks for the complement on the setup. It's constantly evolving and...
