Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I ended up putting mine in a small bathroom and putting a little electric heater in there. That way, with a few tweeks on the heater's thermostat, I can control the temp in that one small space. I found that Mr. Beer was a whole lot happier at 70 degrees than the 65 I originally started at...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Did you notice any "froth" at the top of your beer a few days after you put it in the fermentor? If you did, the yeast was fine. I've since moved up from the Mr. Beer kit that my daughter got me for Christmas... but before scrapping Mr Beer, I made 4 or 5 batches with it using their LMEs and...

Moved my belgium strong to secondary and ...

I feel a lot better about the under pitch today - it started perking after 18 hours and now, after 36 hours, I've got a 4" krausen. Nonetheless, I plan to rack it to glass in a couple of weeks and give it 4 months to eat those banannas!

    Turkey Fryer Modification (pic)

On second thought... looking closer at the pic, it looks like you can just unscrew that fitting from your existing hose. Of course then, you'll have a male end on your hose... if you are lucky, there is a nipple on the other side that you can remove.

    Turkey Fryer Modification (pic)

Personally, I'd just scrap the hose with the safety valve end. Replace with another hose that doesn't include the safety valve and voila', you're all set. You should be able to get a hose at a propane dealership... or possibly an Ace Hardware.

Moved my belgium strong to secondary and ...

I just did the same recipe yesterday. My OG came out to 1.080, I think because I topped off up to 5.25 gallons instead of the specified 5.0 (wanted a little extra to account for the trub). Anyways, I didn't build a starter; Ed at Brewers warehouse suggested I not because he thought that for...

    AHS Belgian White - Aging?

Greetings! I just brewed my very first 5 gallon batch... a Belgian White extract from Austin Homebrew. I think it all went smoothly because their instructions were first rate. I do have one question though... it says "This handcrafted beer will taste best after 3 weeks of storage." Is that 3...

How Important is Boiling "top off" Water?

I'm still a newbie... got my start with a Mr. Beer. Moving up to 5 gallon batches now and wondering how important it is to pre-boil the 2 gallons of "makeup" water pre-fermentation. I didn't do it with the Mr. Beer and got what I considered to be outstanding results. In case it matters, for...

Advice needed - first brew problems

If you stuck your bottles onto the "pegs" inside your dishwasher to dry after sanitizing, I think you could have picked up an infection, inconsistently, off of the pegs in the washer. Personally, I'd be fearful of having an unsanitized "peg" stuck inside a sanitized bottle.

Methods for Adjusting Temp in Mash Tun?

How important is it that the water be sterile? I mean, tap water is good enough, no? PS: Just wonderin' since it'll all be boiled soon enough, won't that vaporize any chlorine and kill any bugs?

    Attention new all grain brewers!

I was reading this thread and noticed that the question about why a 10 gallon tun will drop more in temperature when grain is added than a 10 gallon tun. I have to ask, is anyone considering the starting temperature of the grain? Here is an even wilder idea... if you wanted your post-drop...

Methods for Adjusting Temp in Mash Tun?

I'm about to launch into the world of AG. Just wondering if the following ideas will work: Let's say, I drop my grain into the mash water and the resulting temperature is too low. What if, I pulled out say, 1/2 a gallon of water from the tun, heated it up to almost boil, and slowly add it...

    When is it done fermenting?

I'm not an expert... but, in my experience... I've simply chosen to "let it be" for 14 days, realizing that it finished in nearly every case, sooner than that. Why? It doesn't hurt to let it sit longer... in fact, I'm guessing that it may even help it a wee bit. Patience, once again, is a...

NOOB: Extract vs Partial vs All Grain

I've read this thread with interest... I'm very new to the hobby and just "graduated" from a Mr. Beer to a Deluxe Kit from Austin Homebrew (+ three ball kegs from Chi)... all to be delivered this coming week. Here's my deal... the wife and I drink a lot of good beer, and have done so for 30...
