American IPA Bell's Two Hearted Ale Clone (close as they come)

Just wanted to say "thanks" for the recipe. It tasted great and I used this as the base (with a couple slight modifications) for my first homebrew competition entry (Upper Mississippi Mash Out). The two judges gave it a 43 and a 40, with some great comments pointing towards the need for a...

Adding color to a dry stout without touching flavor.

Briess has a "Midnight Wheat" that adds practically nothing but color. Does your LHBS stock that?

    Vienna "lager" with Kolsch yeast?

Thanks everyone! I have made one beer previously with WLP029 and was similarly impressed with the results. I'll be brewing something this weekend and the lines of the recipe above from ghpeel. Will try to remember to post some follow-ups. Thanks again.

    Vienna "lager" with Kolsch yeast?

ghpeel: thanks for the recipe, and that is a fantastic beer name. How much Aromatic did you settle on in your revised recipe...like a 1/4 lb or so?

Dry hopping: flavor evolution over time?

I said I would post how this turned out and then promptly forgot to do that. Well, the recommendation to give it more time was spot on. The beer turned out just great and is looooong gone. Will brew again.

    Vienna "lager" with Kolsch yeast?

My Cousin in Law is looking for something amber colored, relatively clean yeast profile, and balanced between hoppy and malty. A nice Vienna lager came to mind, but my chest freezer is doing full-time keezer duty these days, so I don't have the ability to hold temps in the low to mid 50's...

    Comment On IPA Please

I have used 1lb of C40 before in an IPA and found it to be a little cloying. On my setup, 3/4 is about spot on.

Is my batch going to be terrible?

Way to go! To me, this is what homebrewing is about. If you like it, and you learned something about what you like and don't like, the experiment was a success. I might just have to throw a pound of C120 or Chocolate into my next beer.

    IPA/Pale Ale SMaSH Recipe

Well, I guess I would recommend you play around with some brewing software, like BrewToad or Brewer's Friend to really fine tune the recipe you want. But, you should be good with ~4 gals of 165F strike water, hold at 152-154 for 60 minutes, sparge with 165-170F water (batch or continuous)...

If so, how about something like: 11 lbs Vienna or Maris Otter 1 oz Amarillo or Centennial @60 1 oz Amarillo or Centennial @10 or @15 1 oz Amarillo or Centennial @0 Your favorite yeast (Wyeast 1450 or 1968...

Getting worse as a homebrewer-1st All Grain=Astringent Taste

Is it possible you are mashing higher than you think? Thermometers can sometimes read correctly at freezing and boiling temps, but be off where you need them to be accurate:148-160. My first couple all grain batches suffered from a bad thermometer. Bought a Traceable digital one and have been...
