    Stout fermentation temp

The first few day are the critical ones for temperature. For many if not most ale yeasts the 64F. ambient would be better as it slows the fermentation so the yeast do not give off fusel alcohol or excessive esters. After the first week the warmer temperatures would be fine...

    Fermentation Appears Finished at Day3

Read through this article. It explains a lot. http://www.brewgeeks.com/the-life-cycle-of-yeast.html

Need a workable filter/solution (or boiler replacement) for Grainfather G30 pump sticking

Just to quickly find out if you want a bag inside your Grainfather, go to your local big box lumber seller and buy a paint strainer bag. If it is big enough, fasten the top around the outside of the Grainfather. I like to pour the milled grain in while stirring with a whisk. Paint strainer...

    Half-full fermentor not bubbling

it takes a certain amount of pressure for the airlock to bubble. When that threshold is reached, the airlock bubbles until enough pressure is relieved and then it stops while the pressure builds again. Instead of continuous bubbling you may see burst bubbling and then nothing as it builds...

    Big Mouth Bubbler

There are several places selling them so either they are still being made or some suppliers have a big inventory to get rid of. Oops, I see they are glass. Were they having problems with the plastic ones?

    Persistant infection

What is upwind of you? I had that same symptoms and the cure for it was for the neighbor to die so his huge pile of corn silage was sold and removed. That multi-ton pile was producing so many bacteria and wild yeast that the air in my whole area became contaminated.

    Distilled water usage

The point of rinsing the probe in distilled water is to avoid any mineral deposits. Just because the distilled water is past its expiration period does not add any minerals. The point of using distilled water for brewing is to start with a blank slate, no minerals in the water, then add just...

Stuck Fermentation: Am I about to make a terrible mistake?

Things to consider that you haven't mentioned. The temperature during the mash affects the final gravity. Heating during the mash can denature enzymes raising the final gravity. Using a refractometer or an electronic hydrometer can give false results. The estimated final gravity is just that, an...

Is my brew stalled or finished?

    1. No. 2. Yes, If your fermentation is stalled it can restart and cause bottle bombs. It is unlikely to have stayed stalled for that long. Bottle it but put the bottles in a plastic tub with a lid. If one blows, expect the rest to follow.

Tips on separating dead yeast from fresh ?

Have you considered how many yeast cells are in that clear liquid?

If you have a hydrometer, pull a sample and see how it compares to the Tilt. Pull a second sample in 3 days and compare again.

    Wheat Malt - ideal crush?

The milling of the grain determines the mash efficiency. Finer crush means faster and more complete conversion. However, the finer the crush, the more difficult lautering becomes as the smaller particles will clog up the spaces between the husks. If you recirculate, this exacerbates the...

Brewing ramp for rye malt ..ramp is required ?

Your method of doing the mash determines that to a large extent. Rye is a gooey mess in a conventional mash tun, full of glucans. If you do a rest in the range of 104-122F beta glucanase enzyme will break down the glucans so the mash isn't a sticky. There is evidence that the kilning process...

    Hefe question.

Wheat has no husk so you cannot use its husk for filtering when you drain the mash like you can with barley. Add some rice hulls to replace the missing husk for filtering. Otherwise, wheat does just fine in a normal mash.

What BIAB brewing actually is (Mythbusting for traditionalists)

A sparge can increase the brewhouse efficiency by 5-10% so it isn't really necessary. I do it because the pot that I mash in is a little small to get the entire amount of liquid plus the grains to reach my desired volume of wort. Adding a tiny amount of grain to the mash can make up for the...

Would you dry brewing with animal feed if you had a grain bin with 1000 bushels in it?

    Thoughts on this motorized mill?

In the specification section of the Amazon listing it shows that the mill comes with a 40 watt gear motor. A 40 watt motor is quite small so I would expect the milling to take a long time. There is a link in the listing for another mill that is quite similar but has a 60 watt motor that might...

How to Get Clear Samples for Refractometer?

Anton Parr makes high quality analytical equipment and it may be that to get the highest accuracy with a refractometer the wort needs to be filtered but do you really care if your wort turns out to be 1.05467 instead of 1.05453? I feel I have done well to get within 0.005 of the expected OG and...
