    Low fermentation temp

I bought a house (aka project) in August. Lets just say the insulation is not top notch, and as previously mentioned, it's really cold in NE right now. I brewed a stout the weekend before last, and after a week in the primary, I moved it to another spot in the house to make room for another...

Volume Problem (aka not enough beer)

This does not seem to be a seasonal thing. It's happened on just about every beer I've done over the past year + (5 or 6). What do you mean by boiling harder? A boil is a boil right? I don't get much over 215deg during the process.

Volume Problem (aka not enough beer)

I'm using beer smith. I think I was low on OG this time as I was only suppose to sparge to a vol of 6.5g but let it go long to 6.75 because I have bee over my OG targets and low on vol in the past. I usually mash right around 152deg. I have a pretty efficient mash on this batch with a first...

Volume Problem (aka not enough beer)

So... I'm having a consistent volume issue. I keep ending up with only about 4.25g of wort going into my primary when shooting for a 5g batch. Last weekend I brewed a Hoppy Wheat. All grain, 11lbs in a 5g mash tun. Mashed in with 13.75 quarts of water, fly sparged with 18.6 quarts. Ended up with...

    covering wort

Thanks for the tip! I have a wort chiller and a 2 bucket system. I have thin hose tubing that I run through the first bucket filled with ice. (Or snow if available, which in norther NE this winter it readily is!) then hook up that to the wort chiller. Then put the brew kettle in the second...

    covering wort

That's what I thought - just wanted to double check as it will still be putting off steam at the point I cover it briefly. thanks!

    covering wort

OK - I know this may seem like a silly question. I know the rule of thumb is to never cover your wort while boiling etc... Think there is any risk in covering it for like 2 minutes while I carry it outside to cool, so the snow dripping of the house doesn't fall in the wort? thanks!

    spent grain cookies

The drying process is written out in the recipe... I also got a burr grinder shortly after making these. It works great.

    Removing bottle labels

Maine brewing co. uses the same kind of NASA glue, and of course has the perfect 16.9oz bottle. I will usually dry peel the label off (with difficulty) then run through dishwasher on super hot x2 and still takes some serious elbow grease with a magic eraser to get the glue off. It's a great...

    Removing bottle labels

If you have an automatic dishwasher that works too. Just put the bottles in, be sure the temp is set at the highest setting, and put some oxyclean in the soap dispensing area. I did this 2 days ago and most of the lables had fallen off in the dishwasher. Just be sure to stop the machine before...

    dry hopping

Hi all, I currently have a IIPA fermenting that I am ready to dry hop. My secondary was recently pressed into service as a primary this past weekend when I decided to to a "blizzard brew". I have seen a lot of posts on here about how a secondary is not necessary, but a fair number of those...

    spent grain cookies

They aren't burnt. They are that color because the grain I used to make the spent grain flour was a combo of chocolate rye malt, and flaked rye.

    quick brew day question

(Sorry wasn't done... Phone issue) Do you think the lg amount of starter will change the flavor of the beer? The plan is to mix the 4gal batch with the 1gal batch in the bottling bucket at bottling time. Thanks.

    quick brew day question

My time table didn't allow me that kind of time. I decided to brew Sat as I knew I would be cooped up in the house all weekend, so as the first snow started on Friday I made a mad dash to my LHBS to get what I needed. I made the starter (my first) Friday evening, so it was only about 18h old or...

going to pitch soon, quick question

Hi All, I posted this to the yeast section, but haven't heard anything so I thought I would try here as I am getting pretty close to the pitching stage.... Sorry to double post. This may be an odd question but... I used my 1gal jug to make a 2.5L starter. I will be using 2L of it for another...

    quick brew day question

This may be an odd question but... I used my 1gal jug to make a 2.5L starter. I will be using 2L of it for another beer, but will be fermenting a 1gal batch on the remaining 500ml. The question is; can i just pour the cooled wort right on top of the starter? or do I need to pour the starter out...

    Mash tun size?

I'm new to all this but I jumped right in to all grain... I got a 5 gal mash tun with sparge arm and 5gal hot liquor tank from homebrewstuff.com. It works great! It held my temp within 2 degrees F for 75 min. I got > 80% efficiency the first time I used it, and it was way cheeper then any single...

2 quick questions for a snow bound brew day

Hi Everyone, Since I am stuck in the house for the weekend, and they canceled EBF NOTB, I decided to make beer. :D I have 2 quick questions. The first one may sound a little silly but; I'm making a yeast starter tonight, and I don't have any mason jars. Can I use a 1gal growler for a...

Priming Question: DME vs Corn Sugar vs table sugar

Hi all, I have a IIPA in the fementer right now. It has an ABV of 9.4, IBU > 100 and it's 4.5 gal. Fermentation temp is around 66-68F. I have read some differing opinions on what is best to use as a priming sugar, DME vs. corn or table sugar, and amounts to use of each. I have heard that...
