[Not a] Bike Pump Keg [Evolution]

I think 1/8" hose is too small for hose clamps, you need oetiker clamps (expensive). I think your best bet is to use some zip-ties if you're using soft vinyl hose.

Gonna build an Electric Boiler...how to control?

That type of variac would make for a slick setup. That specific unit would burn up with a 5500W load, but if you find one at around 9600VA (40 amps) or even better 12000VA (50 amps) you'd be golden.

Gonna build an Electric Boiler...how to control?

Very little current will run through the dimmer switch, since this is only used to trigger the SSR. The current throught the SSR is what generates the heat. Not the switching on and off. It should not get any hotter if you're switching once per second or 120 times per second. Switching...

Gonna build an Electric Boiler...how to control?

I recently finished my electric kettle conversion using a 5500W RIPP element. I'm using one of these cheap-o SSR / Heatsink combos from ebay: SSR And a homebuilt PWM controller based on the design seen HERE. I have PCB layout files in gerber format that I generated for the controller...

    That "home brew flavor"

I also used to have a problem with the "homebrew taste". I later figured it out to be related to the crappy Muntons Dry Ale yeast I was using, and liquid malt extract. After switching to all-grain, and vowing never to use the Muntons ale yeast again, my beer comes out exceptionally clear...

[Not a] Bike Pump Keg [Evolution]

If you're going to link multiple PET bottles together, I'd recommend connecting them in series. In your 3D models you have the bottles in parallel. Due to the pressure drop caused by the lines the bottles will empty at different rates while in a parallel connection. Once the first bottles...

15 gallon batch on a 10 gallon setup?

My friend has asked me to brew a hefeweizen for his house warming party. He has a sankey kegerator that he plans to use for the party, and would like me to brew 15 gallons to fill an empty 1/2 barrel. The 15 gallon recipe calls for 20lbs of white wheat malt and 11lbs of pale 2 row. 31lbs...

How to avoid over/under shoot with HERMS in HLT?

One more thing. I don't have any type of stirring/circulation mechanism in the HLT with the heat exchanger. I think that this may be a benefit for my system. By doing this I can keep the HLT temperature higher and still not overshoot my mash temperature. A high flow rate through the heat...

How to avoid over/under shoot with HERMS in HLT?

Personally, I use two PID controllers on my HERMS setup. One controls the pump based on the MLT temperature, and the second strictly controls the HLT temp. For a five gallon batch I preheat about 10 gallons of water to my strike temperature (set on a timer over night), based upon my grain...

    Continuous Hopper Project?

Have you considered looking at an electric paintball hopper? I would think it could easily be modified to feed whole hops, or pellets: http://www.cozmopaintball.com/store/images/D/tippmann-a-5-top.jpg

    3500W, 4500W or 5500W

The Pol, Have you received your RIPP heater yet? I was just wondering where you plan to mount it on your keggle. I'm not sure how long the heater is, but if you mount it to the flat spot in the bottom of the keg vertically it may be too high to boil 5 gallon batches. Will it fit in the...

    Bottle Bombs - Damage Reduction

You do not want to leave "more" head-space in the bottle to reduce pressure. This could be counter-productive, and possibly more conducive to a bottle-bomb that causes damage. Leaving a larger head-space allow for a larger volume of expandable gases should the bottle break. The best example I...

    Getting that malty taste?

Thanks for the info. I haven't calculated my efficiency yet, and the crush that I get comes from the brew store. The recent malt looked like it had been cracked, compared to some of the more "crushed" malt that I've gotten before. I've ordered another red ale kit to compare the effects of...

    Getting that malty taste?

Hello All, I'm new to the forum, but I've been lurking for long time. I've been brewing for about two years, and just recently made the move to all-grain. I've got about 5 all-grain brews under my belt all of which turned out pretty good, but not great. My most recent beer was a...
